Uterine Biopsy

Post by Edel »

Hi Ladies

I'm due to get a Uterine Biopsy & saline ultrasound done in the next few months before my next ivf, its just to rule out any infection in lining of the womb and to check out a fibriod I have on the outside of the bottom part of my womb (which apparently poses no threat at the moment). I've had the saline ultrasound done before and is was quite uncomfortable but bareable but ive never had a biopsy, it's just ive been looking up the this procedure on the internet and by all accounts its extremely painful, some referred it to 'an operation without an anesthetic'! I am totally freaked out  , has anyone ever had this done and is it really that painful? Also am i mad to get the 2 done together? It just works out cheaper for us thats all...

Regards

Hi Edel,

I had one done my 7th attempt as i changed clinics and biopsies and saline infusion is protocol. I was told to take anti-inflamatries 1 hour before the procedure, it was uncomfortable and sore but only for about a min plus my doc found i had an irregular lining and removed some of that too but its bearble only brought a little tear to the eye. Once its over with you are fine no after pain. They found a polyp. when doing it and i had it removed under general anaesthic with my gynae who also found a fibroid behind the polyp. and removed that also. Dont worry you will be fine, oh also during the saline infusion i was diagnosed with pcos...you would have thought after 6 attempts with old clinic they would have diagnosed them but they dont do any of those tests. Best of luck you will be grand.

Hi Gi
Thanks a mil for your response, you poor thing looks like you have been through the ringer yourself, you are one brave girl and judging by your summary at the end of your post it has all paid off for you with your BFP so congratulations. :D

Sounds like its all over very quickly which is a plus, ill take something before the procedure which will hopefully help, God I’m such a chicken getting these tests done, not just the discomfort but the fear of what they might find but I guess its better find out now and it get sorted than be faced with another failed cycle! Up until now I have been through 5 cycles, 1 BFP resulting in a chemical pregnancy, 1 FET BFN and 1 cancelled before egg collection and the other after egg collection (no eggs), I have endometriosis on my ovaries which eventually destroyed my eggs so that was the end of the road in that regard. I changed clinics to do a donor cycle which took place in April/May just gone but unfortunately resulted in a BFN also; sadly none of our remaining embryos survived so we have to start all over again – once we get the money up! The new clinic did more in-depth tests before the donor cycle (that should have been done by my previous clinic) which showed a low level autoimmune disorder so they put me on steroids for the last cycle. In our follow up with the clinic it was suggested, before I start another cycle, to get the biopsy and Chicago bloods done just to rule out anything else so that’s where im at at the moment. I just have to book everything once I get my head together and calm down a bit. Were you ever on steroids at all? Im only off them now 2.5 weeks after being weaned off them and I feel like im loosing my mind, im having melt down after melt down and terrible nightmares of my mum or husband dying, I just seem to be going around with this total irrational fear of loss all the time, just wondered if this normal behaviour coming off such medication or should I be booking myself a padded cell! Maybe im just exhausted after everything! God this road seems so endless with constant obstacles in the way, but sure struggle on eh! Well the thoughts of never having a family is more painful so I guess I will put up with anything at this stage if it meant we could hold our little angel!

hey,

Sounds like you have been thro. a lot too!!! We are very similiar after changing clinics for this cycle i got the Chicago bloods done (i am in Ire ) and they showed i had immune probs and also elevated natural killer cells. I was put on steroids (was on them for 3 months!) aspirin (still on it), clexane injections daily till 3mths pg started around time of stims to help improve conditions in my womb and make it more hosptitable, estrogen and progesterone till 16 wks and also metformin for the pcos. Also because of the elevated NK cells i had Intralipid drips 1 wk before ec, 6 days after transfer, at 6 wks pg and 9 wks pg, i got repeated Chicago bloods done at 8 wks pg and they showed my levels dropped to below normal. My docs told me they wanted something to show up in the bloods so they could fix it. Dont worry i am also a big chicken when it comes to these things but it was bearable though i remember thinking that there is no way i will go thro. natural childbirth as 3 mins doing the biopsy was long enough  Hopefully the side effects will subside from the steroids but i assume you have to go back on them again for next cycle?? I hope and pray you too will get your little miracle, i know its tough but my motto is never give up if i had to do 20 attempts i would have though i reckon i would have had to rob a bank

God to think that our previous clinics let us go through those cycles without checking for immune probs first, actually im in ireland too, I think we may be with the same clinic at the mo cos I think there only one that does the Chicago bloods, if so we are in the right place thank god! The France bloods that I got done before last cycle showed a low level of autoimmune so it will be interesting to see what the Chicago bloods show! Its funny in one way ya want them to find something just so they can do something about it to help it work next time!

Actually other than the metformin and the drip I more or less had the same protocol to you. How you managed coming off the steroids after 3 months ill never know ya poor thing, its great boost of energy when on them, I guess that’s why ya crash a bit coming off them, at least I know what to expect next time cos id say ill be definitely on them again. I rang the clinic yesterday and they said it was normal to feel the way i’m feeling and that it will pass, the nurse suggested taking Berocca in a small amount of water to help with the tiredness, so took one yesterday and one today and I have to say I do feel a bit more energised thank God. Also got appointment with donor coordinator & to get the bloods done (haven’t got the nerve to book the biopsy yet but ill get there!) so feel a bit better that the ball is rolling again, hate that limbo in between cycles!

Anyway I feel the way you do, if I have to continue doing this for the next few years ill do it cos aint gona give up either, what doesn’t kill us makes us strong eh! And when we get to hold our babies it will have all been worth it. :)

Thanks a mil for your help and the best of luck with everything. Enjoy the bank holiday weekend; hopefully the sun will stay shining for us. :)

I had one done my last time around. Like gi, they told me to take motrin an hour before. It was pretty uncomfortable and yes, it was like 30 seconds of pain. They put a cath in and then used some sort of hand operated vacuum pump to suck of a piece of your lining. They had trouble getting the "vacuum" to attach to me, making it even more uncomfortable. But honestly, I have been through way more painful things. And once it was over, I just had a little cramping for the rest of the day. Good luck with everything.

Edel,

What a coincidence we are in same clinic (Sims), my old clinic was the Hari and while i thought they were fine at the time you really cant compare the 2 from the tests they do right down to the personal care. I never slept for the 3 months i was on the steroids and after i came off them my goodness did the tiredness set it but its great to finally sleep at night!! I didnt get the France tests done as they said i really needed the more high tech Chicago bloods because of my many failed attempts and 2 miscarriages. I am also on the Irish ivf websites and theres a couple of girls there with the Sims doing donor as well feel free to pop over if you wish though i really love this site as the posts are put on straight away and its much busier. You have a great attitude to keep fighting for what you believe in and i Pray you will get your little miracle soon.
