Very quick question about exercise - thanks!!

Post by caz1 »

Hi all
A question for you - again -sorry!! Got a positive pregnancy test last week

I have been taking it very eaasy recently but up until ec had been doing quite alot of exercise and am missing it a bit. So my question is basically can I resume normal exercise?

did you ladies carry on with your normal routines in early pregnancy. what were you advised?
Books seem to say DO, except if you are a high risk pregancy. I'm not aware that I'm especially high rish (although are all IVF/ ICSI preganancies "high risk" - I dunno?)
I guess I worried about miscarrying -although havent seen anything that say exercise causes it.
I've been tol I havea 15020% chanes of miscarriage which is about what the norm is - other people been told the same??

Anyway - would love some wise word on what you did or didnt do.

I was planning, maybe either the bike/ walking / cross trainer in gym (couldnt run before so certainly not starting now!)
Swimming - have never done really, am total rubbish but maybe should start?
Weights? Dunno?
Any classes?
yoga? Never done - does it help?

ARE THERE ANY OTHER SCREAMING DOS AND DONTS I SHOULD BE AWARE OF AT THIS POINT? AM CLUELESS.

Thankyou SO much!!

No reason for you do be any different to non ifv pg now and that is exercise is good in moderation. The general rule is don;t take up anything new and strenous - especially at this stage and later on you won;t be able to anyway!

Walking is fine - biking is fine at this stage is you are used to it (all I can do to pump up my tyres and then get tired so out for me! ) If you have done it before and regularly then fine if not then don;t start now. Bit later on there is a risk yo will fall off so don;t -same for horse riding and skiing!
I walk the dog each day and that is great and every so often go to the pool to float around like a giant hippo as opposed to swimming like a fish!
Just sort of blob there and call it exercise. Most yoga is fine and you can do yoga for pg ladies. No weights! There is acqua aerobics for ladies.

Just start moderately say walking or cross trainer but don;t go wild ok and take it easy so as not to pull to much. Try some walking and sex!

TRacey thanks so much - I know relative to other stuff going on my question is mega trivial - but I have turned into a complete pain in the arse neurotic woman. Have a totally paranoid fear of having a miscarriage - is this normal do you think?!!

Take care and thanks!!

exercise

Post by ydgg »

Caz,

I'm in my 6th week and had ovarian hyperstimulation, so bedrest was in order. Although I felt like a slug, it was neccessary - only easy walking or swimming allowed.

I was told even with a regular pregnancy, no weights or overly-exerting activity. In the first 3 months especially, its important to take it easy I'm told.

Of course double checking with the doctor would be best.

Cheers,

yvonne

hihi caz, just remember we are all the same never stop worrying,
as for excercise, well the only thing i do is golf but i was advised to
leave it till after the 12 wks probably because of the swinging action,
but as tracey says and also in the books everything in moderation
if your body is use to walking, swimming etc continue but dont overdo.
Must admit from not playing golf for over 12 wks my legs became so
flabby i couldnt believe it in such a short time, but back of the golf
course now, (22wks) played 18 hole match yesterday and have another
on thur im going to continue as long as i can even if its only 9 holes
they say if u are fit it will make the birth a bit easier !!!!!
look after yourself, bet u have to keep pinching yourself its realy
happening

Hi Caz,

I'm laughing as I read this thread - everyone is giving sensible comments, and all I can think about is 'exercise, pregnancy was a great excuse not to do any and not to get nagged at for not doing any!!' LOL

Seriously though, swimming is good - I admit I went to aquanatal classes for about 4 or so weeks before I had Sam (who was 7 weeks early) and it was the only time I really felt him active during the day and I'm convinced that's why he loves his bath and water!! :D I loved it too and you don't swim so you'd be fine!

Walking is good, but as the girls say, whatever you do, take it easy...

Take care

Caz

I hope that as you are not on here you are not mountain climbing somewhere but on a gentle walk  Don;t worry about a stress head - we all are like Alison says - I kept having a bump crisis and Nikola kept telling me off - now I am huge!!!!!!!!

Alison - I used to play golf - well swing my arms and legs around! Not nec in that order  but haven't played for years - would love to take it up again but not sure where the time will come and at 26.4 weeks pg could not possibly swing a club and get past the breasticles or bump - I should manage to get some water and a bunker in amongst that lot

Zoe you do make me laugh - mind you getting plenty of exercise now aren't you

Caz you asked the question that I have been thinking about since EC and now even more since I got a +ve yesterday.

I usually go to the gym and get my exercise clubbing but i haven't done anything for a few weeks cos I was too scared. And because of the Cyclogest, or maybe just cos i have eaten a lot and done no exercise, I have already put on the weight that I should put on after a few weeks of being pregnant.

I was told also exercise in moderation and only what your body was used to before. However, I used to do a bit of weights, which i suppose I should stop. I went swimming today and I am also rubbish at it, so I am not sure how much good it does me.
I am thinking of doing walking on the treadmill and maybe on my bike. I had been horse riding lately but i don't think I will anymore in case I fall off. Although I never have

I am exactly the same as you worried of miscarrying and wondering if it is more likely due to IVF

Tania - will answer you in a bit - congratulations again by the way :D

BUT firstly -you horrid horrid lot picking on me :( Zoe, Gem and Dagny - Gem why do you feel the need to join in - honestly. You know how senstive I am and in my condition too - shall be off now to have a mars bar to cheer me up :?

Exercise even moderate is good for you - excuses or not and it is good for the baby/babies and blood flow and labour and afterwards (not sure about this bit yet as not there)

Tania - you are no more likely to m/c in IVF than non IVF it is just you know sooner or are scanned sooner and worry more. Unless you have placenta praevia or recurrant m/c then carry on gently. Would not do your weights yet - or at least weights that strain the stomach and abdomen - if it is legs or arms and you are used to it then no problem. Try the walking machine - treadmill that's the one :? . I would avoid the horse - I know you have not had an accident but could you imagine if you did?............... just do what you feel comfortable with. At 12 weeks on and until you are a lard arse like me then you can do more as everything is bedded in a lot more

Right off now and ingoring you horrid threesome
Love
