GENERAL IVF QUESTION-- GHOST

Post by nancy1 »

Hi,

I have a general question regarding IVF.
Whether going through fresh cycle or a FET, we are prescribed progesterone shots and tablets post embryo transfer.
In case of a BFN, should you expect to have your period on time, or do those delay it.
Also, what is the role of estrogen in a FET cycle and why are those continued until after the embryo transfer.
Just curious and would appreciate any input.
Thanks,

Progesterone will typically prevent the next period from coming, until the supplements are stopped and the progesterone levels decline. In rare cases, menses comes anyway.

Estradiol is used to thicken the endometrium prior to transfer (in an FET, not really needed in a fresh cycle because the developing follicles make lots of estradiol), and to reduce bleeding afterward. A reasonably thick endometrium is needed for implantation and viable pregnancy.

Thank you Ghost.
If the progesterone prevents menses from starting, does it also get rid of its symtpoms (bloating, breast enlargement, etc... provided that you have a BFN?)

Some of those are the effects of progesterone, so no, progesterone won't prevent them.

There is occasional breakthrough bleeding when on progesterone, especially if no estradiol is given.

Full flow periods are rare while on progesterone, but do sometimes occur. I'm not sure why. I suppose some women may have had their progesterone levels drop too low, or perhaps some don't respond to progesterone like others.
