Ghost or anyone...Ovarian drilling?

Post by miyaya »

Hi! I am looking for some feedback on ovarian drilling. My history is a long one but here it is in a nutshell....
Me 33 PCOS. DH normal. Annovulatory. Conceived ds on 100mg clomid/met with monitoring and hcg trigger. Been TTC #2 for 2.5 years. Failed clomid, failed 3 injectible cycles, HSG clear, very tiny polyps removed. Down reg IVF's beginning September 2009 using gonal f/menopur IVF#1 BFN....only two eggs b/c HCG was not strong enough. IVF#2 21 eggs, 2 transferred (none made it to freeze) ended in chemical. IVF #3 BFN 12 eggs, 1 trasnferred on day 2. RE thinkgs eggs might not be as mature as they could or possible quality issues.

So we decided to consult with another fertility doc before deciding what to do next.He spoke with another RE in Boston and they are thinking that we should not have moved to IVF so quickly and that I should try ovarian drilling, get backon metformin and try some clomid cycles with letrozole???Only use IVF as last resort....They said that drilling can restore ovulatory function in approx 70% of people with PCOS? Has anyone had success? thoughts???
Me (34) with PCOS, LAc
DH (36) TTC#2 IVF#1- -BFN, IVF #2--miscarriage:( 21 eggs and nottin left...bad embies:(, IVF#3--July 2010-12 eggs, only 1 embie made it. BFN!, IVF #4 Miscarriage #2, IVF #5, Miscarriage #3 , IVF #6[/b ?

The docs I work with say they would never do ovarian drilling.

They just don't think that destroying part of the ovary is the answer.

Please think several several times before considering Ovarian drilling. I'm not sure about PCOS - whether this is what is required to be done to achieve pregnancy. But I didnt have PCOS and my inexperienced gynae during laparoscopy went ahead and performed Ovarian drilling 2 years ago. Today, the result is that my AMH is as low as 0.8 ng, 1 failed IVF cycle and no embryos left for freeze. :(

So girl, be very careful and take opinion of atleast 3-4 doctors.

I did ovarian drilling in Jan of this year. I'm 34 and have been ttc for 11 years. My Dr said because of my age (I was 33 at the time), it's not like I had loads of time to play with. I was diagnosed with PCOS Feb 2009. I had years and years of Drs who just didn't give a crap that I didn't have periods. They never paid attention to my symptoms. Anyhow, after the drilling we were going to try IUI. The Dr put me on clomid and I had 2 little eggs that were trying to grow. (I have been on Metformin since Nov 2009.) Dr wanted to cancel the IUI cycle since I wasn't making eggs. He wanted to move to an IVM cycle. Much better for people with PCOS as there is not a risk of OHSS. So that's what we did. Our first IVM cycle was in May of this year. I am now 21w pregnant with a baby girl. If you have ANY questions please let me know. Best of luck to you.

thanks for the feedback. We met with another doctor and basically decided to go forward. I have had 3 IVF cycles and are at the end financially. The OD would be covered by my insurance and at this point the docs are uncertain what IVF potion would be our lucky one. So even if we did not do the OD, it seems like IVF is a real toss up for us. So we will do the OD knowing the risks but also knowing we have decided not to pursue IVF again but will move on to adoption if it does not work. The way I look at it is, my ovaries were not working to begin with, even if we do OD and it does not work, we are in no worse place than we are now...except with the only option being IVF. At least now I can say I tried everything.
