Get AF while on progesterone & waiting for beta? 2WW

hi all...
i'm in my 2ww.. and going a lil nuts.

ghost said that i'm unlikely to get my period until i stop progesterone after my beta... ugh, cause i so want to think that not getting my period is a sign i'm PG..

BUt my clinic says "go get your beta test nov 10, unless you get your period first, then don't bother"

so what's people's experience? did you get AF BEFORE OR AFTER your beta on any bfn's while on progesterone? and does it make a difference PIO or prometrium/endometrium ??

Hi Karen,

I was on Prometrium for both my cycles. Betas at my clinic are for 17 days after transfer (if I remember that correctly) and they told me the same thing about getting AF first.

The first cycle (BFN) I started spotting about 12 days after transfer and had full flow the next day, all while I was still on the prometrium.

The second cycle I started spotting 12 days after transfer, took an HPT that said negative, continued with very heavy bright red spotting, or more what I would call light flow for 5 days. I got a positive HPT and beta at 14/15 DPT. (DS was born nine months later!!)

I don't know if that gives you any hope or not. I do know from experience that if you are on prometrium it IS possible to start your period while you are on it, so maybe not getting AF is a good sign.

I know how nerve wracking the tww is - especailly when you have to wait more than 14 days! Hang in there - I always remind myself "breath in.... breath out...., breath in..... breath out....." I know, easier said than done!!

I know that it's possible to have a bleed even with progesterone - my clinic has asked me if I've had spotting before... although I have never gotten a bleed while on it, I always had to stop the progesterone and take meds to get my system to cleanse out to start again.

Are you experiencing spotting? You only have a few more days before your beta.... I know it's agony but time will pass. Are you going to the Victoria clinic?

Karen...I am really surprised that your doc would tell you to go get a beta unless you start your period first. Progesterone normally keeps you from starting your period...even though a very very few have had a bleed while on it. Plus lots of IVF women have bleeding when they are actually pregnant and think that they have started when really it is something else and it usually ends up being harmless, too...you sure wouldnt want to stop the progesterone and find out you were actually pregnant. I would go get a beta regardless before ever stopping the progesterone. Most docs will tell you this as well. I have never had a period while on progesterone. I have to stop it for 5 days before it comes...I am always on PIO shot. Although, I have been on the suppositories while trying naturally at home, and honestly cant remember now how long I had to wait for AF, 2 days maybe? Good Luck to you!

I know everyones body reacts differently and for me on all my negative cycles i always started spotting around 7-8 days post 3 day transfer despite been on crinone suppository, in saying that all my symptoms for bfn and bfp's were exact same like period cramps,lower back pain but i know this was from the progesterone. Best of luck, i will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I've only done one IVF cycle. I got my BFN beta on Friday, 11/5, and was told to stop my PIO shots. So my last PIO shot was Thursday night. AF arrived today, Sunday, 11/7.

Karen – When I got a BFN, my AF didn’t appear until after my negative beta and stopped progesterone. I was on IM progesterone. I know how hard the 2ww is so anytime you think you are visiting crazy town, you can always come on here and chat with us.

I have geard its not supposed to be possible but hear i am my 2ww ended on sunday 14/11 but my af was due on thurs 11/11. And it arrived right on time even though i am on 800 progesterone a day and estradiol 50 so i guess maybe with the IM shots its more effective thats definately one of the queries i know have with my clinic they claimed af could not have come it had to be spotting so ended up going to show them my heavy flow and they were like oh! That shouldn't happen i'm sure the pessaries arnt as effective as the shots i think one of the reasons for my bfn is progesterone support was just not enough, then again there are women out there whom bleed through out there pregnancy so hope for the best

hi wishing, i personally think the pressies are just as effective.. so far my experience is that now i have a chemical pg.. my beta was at 7 on friday when i went off the pressies, and i still haven't got AF. i wish it would come so i could get on with the next cycle.

i had my son using progesterone supposititories.. they are supposed to be quite effective as put in vaginally, they get absorbed right into the uterus.. but i understand many prefer the shots though and of course, it's a very individual choice. most of us actually don't need progesterone (except ai, but are given it as a precaution

My experience goes both ways. The first 4 IVF cycles I never had AF until the doc stopped me on the progesterone. Twice it was a BFN and once twice I miscarried. Even the times that I miscarried I did not start bleeding until after stopping all meds. On my fifth cycle I got pregnant again, and had another miscarriage. This time I started bleeding right away, and I was on double the progesterone. I guess I am trying to tell you that there is no one right answer, every cycle is different.
