advice on blood tests please

Post by Natalie Anne »

Hi

I'm in the process of having blood tests before we start ivf with ICSI (because my DH has had a vasectomy).

I'm not that regular but my average cycle is 30 days so i was told to go for a blood test to check if i'm ovulating on day 23. It came back as "abnormal" which worried me but then i've only come on today on day 32, rather than day 30.

is that why it's abnormal? next consultation isn't til 7th June. Is there another way they will check i am ovulating? there must be so few women who are perfectly regular that loads of them must have this problem and i can't believe that they make you keep guessing month after month until you hit the right day.

Also, they've asked me to go for blood tests on days 1-5 but somewhere else i heard days 2-4 are more accurate.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Feel like i've got such a long way to go and am already worrying about little things! Everyone else seems so brave i'm already wondering how i'll cope when it comes to the serious stuff!

Hi Natalie

Welcome to the site. It can be a great support as well as a bit of a mad house but there will alway's someone who can help you.

My hospital do bloods between days 2 and 5 to see what the hormone levels are like. As for ovulation tests I am not quite sure. It was so long ago that I had that test if I had it at all, I don't quite remember. I am usually a 30/35 day cycle and bleed for over a week.

The whole IVF process is always a waiting game as you are finding out. Don't worry about worrying, if that makes sense? It is natural to worry but once you get going on the treatment it's amazing how you find the strength and we are here to help you through it too.

Good luck and keep in touch.

Hi Natalie
I know how you feel, I have had to go for lots of day 21 blood tests, but like you I'm very irregular, anything from 21 to 35 days. So not surprisingly when I went for all my day 21 tests, they all came back abnormal, either too high or too low. Its very frustrating because you keep telling them, but they don't listen. I kept being seen by my consultants registrar, until I asked to see my consultant in person next appointment. It worked & he put us forward for IVF. I have since had blood test taken on day 5 & we have an appt on monday 24th to get results. Hopefully these will give a better picture. Good luck with the blood tests on monday & Dagny, good luck with your next attempt.

Hi

sorry to hear it's been so awkward for you so far. At least you're seeing the consultant now. I hope it goes well tomorrow. If he recommends another way to check you're ovultating, i'd be interested to hear as it's another 2 wks til i see my consultant.

thanks

Hi Natalie,
Just got back from consultant appt. Have been told we have to go for ICSI, not just IVF. Bit disappointed because theres no waiting list for IVF, but theres a 6 month wait for ICSI, cos 1 of the embryologists is on maternity leave! How ironic is that?!
Do you get any pain on either side during your cycle, in the 2 weeks beofre you come on? I usually do & this is usually about the time I'm ovulating. Also there is a method called the Billings method, which involves monitoring your mucus (sorry, not nice, I know, but was quite effective) Hope this helps & sorry about disgusting bit!

Hi Abi

That IS ironic that the embryologist is on maternity leave. It's like a poke in the eye isn't it? How frustrating though that you have to wait 6 months extra because of it.

I tend to know when I am ovulating as I sometimes get a pain in the ovary region but I tend to get more mucus discharge (sorry TMI  ). It never helps me to know because I have had my tubes removed so knowing when I am ovulating is a bit redundant isn't it?

I hope the ball can get rolling for you soon.

Best of luck

Abi

thanks for the advice. Sorry about your wait - every bit of this process seems to inolve maddening waits!

i get my day 4 blood test results back this afternoon so i'm hoping they are ok and that when i see the consultant next Mon he will suggest something else (maybe the icky mucus thing?!) for the ovulation check.

Natalie
Good luck with blood tests this afternoon. I'm trying to make the most of the 6 months, without having to think about blood tests, appointments & doctors. Just to add to it, though, my sister has been waiting for 2 years for their ivf treatment to start & they had their 1st blood tests the day after us & now have the go-ahead to start treatment in July!
Natalie & Dagny thanks for your thoughts & messages,
