twins - did both yolk sacs show at same time?

Post by zoegirl »

Hi-
When did your yolk sacs appear? Does poor quality of sleep hurt an early pregnancy?

I showed two sacs one week after a positive pregnancy test. One measuring 4 weeks 1 day and one measuring 4 weeks 2 days. Only one had a yolk sac. The nurses seemed OK with this and said it was early for a yolk sac to be present anyway. Then, today I heard from teh IVF coordinator on a related call and she said that it is too early to call this a twin pregnancy because there was no yolk in one. The RE wants to do my next US himself . . .

I've only known about the possibilty of two for 3 days but have suffered for them already by dealing with my DH who is not so happy about twins. I already feel strongly that I want both of them. This is irrational, I know, as a twin pregnancy would likely be harder and riskier and three kids financially will push us beyond our limit . . .

I'm now worried that my difficulty sleeping is hurting the pregnancy. I don't sleep well when pregnant and my husband snores so he wakes me up every 1-2 hours. We have no spare bedroom and he stays up much later than I do so sleeping downstairs has not been an option. I suppose i could go downstairs each night the first time he wakes me up and sleep on the sofa.

Thanks!

I completely understand and it is not irrational. I had an US at 5w2d and it showed one gestational sac. At 6w5d I saw two heartbeats, but even after seeing two heartbeats my OB cautioned me that one in five are vanishing twin. Sure enough at 8w there was one strong baby with a HB and no HB on the other baby. My one bean in very healthy but I mourn the twin every day. A vanishing twin is very common in IVF. You were so early that lots of things can change and you can have a healthy twin in there show up. This wait is agonizing, I understand. The important thing is to concentrate on the fact you are pregnant and try to rest and relax. Best of luck!

I had an abdominal u/s during my 5th week, saw a sac with a little dot in it and what might have been another sac. DH was excited that it might be twins, I was skeptical, thinking it was way to early and it was an abdominal u/s at that. The next u/s was in the ER when I was bleeding, I thought for sure that I was miscarrying. The doctors saw one healthy heartbeat and what appeared to be a sac, but didn't see anything in it. The very next day I was scheduled for a radiology u/s, I was 7 weeks at this point. There, just one day after only seeing one baby with a healthy heartbeat, I saw two little dots with two healthy heartbeats. The bleeding was the cause of a subchorionic hemorrhage, it didn't hurt the pregnancy, but scared me every day for 5 weeks while I bled. lol So, even as late as 6w6d pregnant, you can see one baby and not the other and the very next day see both. It really ALL has to do with the type of equipment used. The radiology department had a much better machine than the ER.

As far as only wanting one and you might be getting two. Well, it can be difficult to swallow. We were in no way ready to buy two of everything! However, if that is what you have to do, you find a way. We got a lot of brand new or like new items from Craigslist or friends. It's amazing what you can get for free too! If you only have the money for one crib, that's fine, twins do better together anyway, I am sure you have heard the term co-bed. They say it helps them develop better. If you can't afford a crib, there is always a pack and play with bassinet that works too. My twins are two months old and still using that together. Of course, they are about to go in the crib now that they are sleeping through the night. It will be really hard on you though if DH doesn't get excited about twins if that is what it turns out to be. Hopefully he can accept it and be happy about it. Your pregnancy will go by a lot smoother then, because towards the end, it can be rough on you. I have experienced one baby and twins now and I can tell you, that with a good supportive husband, two is no harder than one. :) And when you have to do it all on your own, you quickly adjust and find a way to care for both of your babies. So try not to stress too much the fact that there may be two in there.

I don't think lack of sleep will hurt your baby or babies at all. It only hurts you really. Try to figure out how to get some rest. Your baby(ies) will do great in there no matter how much sleep you get. :) Just try to enjoy the pregnancy, after all, you worked hard for it right? ;)

I didn't have twins....but I have a snoring DH. I have to use ear plugs. Just get them at Target or whatever. They sell them in packs of 10. Don't get the ones that are attached. As far as lack of sleep, until 22w I was working as an international flight attendant. I was up all night and slept most of the day. A few days later my sleep cycle would change. You'll be ok honey. But really....ear plugs...highly recommend them. :D

I used to use earplugs. . . until I developed tinnitus last year. Now earplugs basically lock me in with all the annoying high pitched hissing and beeping. Can't do it. I use earphones and listen to crickets, ocean, waterfall, etc. but eventually the CD ends and I can hear everythig. We usually run a fan which helps, bu it has become too cold to run a fan . . .

zoegirl - at my first u/s at 6 wks I had 2 sacs, both with yolk sacs. By 6w6d, 1 sac had a fetal pole and h/b and the other sac had not progressed. The 2nd sac itself continued to grow slowly but nothing ever developed in it. We still see it on u/s so that's a sad reminder of a little one that just didn't make it, but we're blessed to have our singleton growing nicely in there. When is your next u/s?
