help-is it risky to fly during early pregnancy?

Post by Tania »

Hello

I am nearly 8 weeks pregnant and meant to flying to San Francisco on Saturday for two weeks. Up until now I thought there would be no problem, as two of my fertility nurses said I should go.

However, today I went to see my GP for the first time and she said she wasn't sure if I should go. But she didn't seem to give me a good reason why not.

I know I should walk around a lot and drink lots of water but I wondered if anyone knew for a fact either way.

Hi Tanya,
I had exactly the same worries (and remember posting about this) - I'm 9 weeks and equally worried about flying (have to for work, but am not an air hostess).
Anyway, I asked my clinic and GP and they both said that it wasOK. The main risk is DVT, which we are more at risk of, being pg. So, put on those lovely thick support socks, walk round on the plane and keep drinking and you'll be OK. I specifcally asked whether flying could do harm to the baby or cause me to miscarry, but they said that's not the case at all, it's the deep vein thrombosis that's the issue.
Hope this helps a little! The others on here all assured me it was fine - and if anyone knows it's them...!
Happy travelling!

How lovely to see you giving advice - well done - you soon got in to the swing!
Tanya - she is absolutely right - no reason you can't fly - think of all those air hostesses and pilots who do it each day - the population would not have grown much - if you are not already taking it - pop an aspirin or even for two days before you go - one each day and get those attractive DVT socks and a litre bottle of water - the exercise is easy - you have to keep going to the loo  Enjoy your holiday. Some GP's are most strange!

Tania - had been wondering exactly the same - as we're off soon too

All I can tell you is My friend who did IVF recently - flew to somewhere MILES away - (cant remember where, exotic island - we're talking near AUSTRALIA though !!)....she did everything you ahve been advised and was just fine. She did say it was the ONLY time she had sickness though -just to warn you! Anyway she was fine and has healthy baby!

How are ya generally?

Hi Tania,

I am SO jealous - I love San Francisco!

I didn't fly long-haul but I did fly to Switzerland at 6 weeks pregnant. To be honest it never occurred to me not to book a holiday after treatment and it was only on reading sites like this afterwards that I realised that some people have been advised not to fly in early stages. I was fine after both flights and as Tracey says, air stewardesses and the like are flying all the time in early pregnancy. So I would certainly go if I were you ... and enjoy yourself.

Tania

I specifically asked at my hospital yesterday if it was OK to fly as I want to go to Switzerland next weekend and I was told it was fine to fly short and long haul. Just got the same advice about DVT so go for it and have a great time whilst you can still fit into a bikini without scaring anyone!

Hi

Thanks for all the replies. I have decided to go anyway. I have already cut down a lot on travelling because of all the treatment and hospital visits governing my life for ages.

I need a holiday and will probably go away again in a few months, I am planning to go to Iceland.

I doubt I will be wearing a bikini as it is not that kind of holiday and I have a good excuse for my DP to carry my bag!!
