PIO question!

Post by rypell1985 »

Ok so I have been on PIO for what seems like FOREVER!!!!! RE wants me to continue until 14 weeks....from what I'm reading on here, that seems like a bit of overkill??? Any thought? I did a FET, so I don't know if that plays into it at all. Ob doesn't think it's necessary, but doesn't wanna step on RE's toes! Now here's the kicker....I'm really running out of room to stick this needle, and I think we may have hit a nerve or something because I hurt from my hip down the back of my leg!

So I guess the questions in all this are:
1. How long did you remain on your progesterone?
2. Would you go over RE's head and stop when OB thinks it's ok?
3. Do you think it's possible I hit a nerve? And if so, should I be calling the doc?

Thanks!!!!!!

I did progesterone supposetories. RE wanted me on them for the first 12w. When I started going to OB he said to stop them after 9 or 10w. I can't remember exactly. I just remember that I stopped when the OB said. Everything has ended up fine for the most part. If you are feeling that much pain...always call the Dr. There is no reason for us to suffer.

Ryann – You are just moving right along with your pregnancy!! I was on the PIO shots for my FET and weeks 16 through 36 during my last pregnancy and that was by choice to be sure nothing went wrong because of my previous history of a stillbirth. Your placenta should have taken over producing Progesterone by week 9 through 11 and most OB think it is fine to wean off by then. If your shots are becoming too painful, you can always ask to be switched over the vaginal suppositories. The suppositories have a slight discharge so you will have to wear a liner but it is much better than having to go through the torture of those shots.

1.) Answered above.
2.) No, I would talk it over with your RE and if he or she insists on you being on Progesterone until week 14, then asked to be switched to the suppositories.
3.) Yes, it is very possible that you hit a nerve and common also. Calling them will not help but you can certainly call them and asked to be switched to a different form for sure.

I was on PIO until 12.5 weeks per the instructions of my OB....and she even said it was not really necessary but wanted me to have my nuchal scan and then stop if all looked ok. I don't think it is necessary to be on it that long unless you have a progesterone issue. But I say go with your OB's suggestion. Doesn't harm anything except you butt! Ha! If you are a petite person, you might not need a needle as long as your average person. Like I used one that was 1 1/2 inch....but I know many petite ladies use only a 1" length needle.

I was "released" from RE care in my 8th week so there was no issue of stepping on toes. Is there a reason you are still seeing your RE and not just your OB? I'm sure your RE wouldn't be offended by taking it longer if your OB suggested it. After all, the OB will be caring for your pregnancy until delivery.

So happy to hear things are going well and each day is a day closer to meeting your precious babies! :)

Thanks for the responses!

Angela-I actually started on Crinone and had an AWFUL reaction. I was in tears because it was soooo painful! I will def take the butt pain any day over going back to the suppositories!

Karen-I have been released from my RE since 8 weeks as well, but she said to stay on PIO til February 21 then go back to her for a blood test to make sure all is well. OB wanted to get me off now, but when I told him what RE said, he was just like, oh ok, then I'm not chAnging anything! I know I'm getting closer and closer! I had a throw up-free day yesterday and have only thrown up once today....perhaps turning a corner!!!!! Prior to all my IVF mumbo jumbo I would have considered myself petite, but not anymore! I'm sure there's plenty of cushion for those big ole needles!

So I guess I'm just sucking it up :) thanks again for your responses!!

My RE had me on PIO injections until about week 10. Then, I switched to suppositories for week 11 and 12.

I didn't want to do the suppositories but I finished out because that was what my RE wanted me to do. My OB didn't seem to care either way.

I did progesterone up to 10 week mark. I used endometrium which is actually the only FDA approved for luteal support, it was a pill insert. I always had awful reactions to the injectible oil to the point of not being able to walk. The endometrium three times a day worked great! I would not disregard RE, my OB also said to do whatever RE said!

I am currently on PIO shots too. I am on week 8 of 10. I agree it's getting quite painful. I have welts and bruises all over my hips. If it gets too bad I skip a particular hip for a few days. DH and I had the conversation on if we would stop if my OB thinks its ok. We decided to stick with the pain and follow the REs advise. Afterall, he's the one that got us here. And yes, the nurse told me it is rare but possible to hit a nerve.

Hey Ryann!

I did 2cc up through 10 wks. Then my RE switched me to endometrin twice a day for a week then I stopped completely. I didn't have any bleeding or anything like that before. Did you have some bleeding? If you did, maybe this is why your OB wants you to continue. I was the same way. I was getting bruises and bumps and couldn't sleep sometimes. At least twice I think I was a little infected because it was red and purple and warm to the touch. I thought I would die. I'm so glad it's over. Tell your OB how difficult it's getting and ask for b/w.

You're a trooper! Hang in there! It's for a GREAT cause! :D

Karin and SD....I think I will ask for the shorter needles-at least see what they say! It can't hurt, right?! Yes, I had bleeding at 7 weeks....enough to land me in the ER. My RE says the reasoning is that I did an FET so my ovaries are no way producing any hormone on their own. Who knows! I'm starting to feel a little better, so I am accepting the bum pain a little better! Thanks for the advice!
