Hi,
An u/s a week ago showed that I had an empty sac but no fetal pole and no HB. Another yesterday showed same thing at 8 weeks. I am getting a D&C later this week so I'm wondering of the gals who have had the misfortune of having a D&C, what was it like? And what was the recovery like? And did you get anesthesia. My clinic gives "light anesthesia..."
I just want to hear from others who've gone thr a D&C so I'm better prepared physically and mentally.. .
thanks, lostgirl
Me: 37 DH:40 TTC since 2005. First IVF cycle canceled. 2nd cycle BFP 1/11. DS arrived late 2008. 3rd cycle, U/s 3/7. Devastated. NO fetal pole or HB.
I had two blighted ovums back to back... I choose to take the meds and wait for AF naturally. I know a lot of women have the D&C and don't seem to find it that bad.
I'm really sorry things didn't work out.

I had a D&C after a missed miscarriage (baby never grew larger than 6 weeks - hb stopped around 8 weeks - nothing happened, so I had a D&C at 10 weeks). It's really not so bad, physically. Like the ER, you'll do prep (ie, fasting, they'll weigh you, blood pressure, etc) and then you wait until the doctors are ready. You go into the room and lie down. They hook you up to a ton of monitors. They put you to sleep. You wake up in recovery. Done.
I had bleeding for about 4 weeks afterwards. My hCG didn't go back to zero for about 9 weeks - but that is SUPER unusual. How soon your beta drops depends on how high it was (mine was above 60,000) and how fast your body metabolizes it (which you can't change).
I'm so sorry this is happening to you. It's really awful. For me, I live near a small-ish hospital. My D&C was in the same procedure room as my ER had been just a few weeks earlier. It was sad and ironic.
Physically, the D&C isn't bad. Emotionally - well - this SUCKS.
PM me if you have any questions for me.

LostGirl -- I had a D&C with my 12 week miscarriage last May. The baby had died and I went through lots of pain and contractions (full on labor!) but my cervix stayed tightly closed. I went to the ER with the pain (very little bleeding) and in the morning I had a D&C. They took me into surgery and put me to sleep for it. When I woke up, no pain! It wasn't bad at all. There's very little bleeding after a D&C because they scrape out all the tissue. Your body will reset and you will ovulate agin in about a month. I also had a D&C in December when I had a fibroid removed. I really think it made my BFP possible by making sure my uterus was nice and clean and ready. Good luck to you. I'm so sorry you have to go through this.
<hugs>

I appreciate you sharing your story, Lou. Thanks. All the best for you. It's always hard to let go of the past, but be sure to enjoy your time this time around. You are pregnant! Best wishes, lostgirl

I'm so sorry about your loss of this pregnancy. It really hurts and we understand.
Lou mentioned something very important....I have read more than once and heard my doc/RE even say sometimes it isn't a good idea to do a D&C right away unless the pregnancy will not pass on it's own...like in Lou's case. The uterine lining can develop scar tissue when done at this time. If you have one now, I would ask about this as a "side effect". I had one but 2 months after my loss at 23 weeks (vaginal delivery) when residue was noted in uterus by my RE...and I was already scheduled for another surgery anyway, so I did it at the same time. xo

Thanks Karen. My best friend is an ob-gyn so i asked her a ton of questions, and also asked my doc too about the risks of a DandC and it appears the fibroid surgery I had way back when before my son was born was 10 times more of a risk than a DandC. Thanks for your concern though. Lostgirl

Lostgirl i am so sorry for your loss (((((hugs))))), in my opinion its the mental recovery thats the hardest not the physical side of the d&c. I have had 3 in total, 2 for miscarriages both babies died one at 7 wks and another at 10 wks and i was told i wouldnt lose on my own, and the 3rd was to remove fibroids. I also have some scar tissue as a result of these but it didnt stop me getting pregnant again. The surgery itself was fine, done under GA i do remember as i was going under i said goodbye to my babies. I was a little tender, like a period pain but didnt need any painkillers and i bled for about 4 wks (more spotting than bleeding) it took 6 wks for my hcg to go to zero. I didnt believe that i would ever hold onto a pregnancy but 7th ivf resulted in my little precious girl, i believe i had to go thro. this long journey for a reason....to get my little Kayla.... and she was worth every tear shed.
Will be thinking of you xxx

I'm recovering at home with the sweetest husband doting on me. SO far no crying today. The first time since we found an empty sac. Even if I cry later on, making to the afternoon without shedding a tear is a record. Maybe a leaf is turning? Thanks for all your responses. I really appreciate it. Lostgirl
