I am planning to travel from California to the East Cost when I am 24 weeks to visit my family. I'm now 20wks pregnant with twins and have had no complications so far. My OB said that she doesn't allow her twin mamas to travel past 25 wks and I would get back the day I turn 25 wks. She said it was okay to go. Now that it's getting near, I'm getting nervous because my in-laws are begging me not to go. I was fine with it before, but the more they bug me, the more I think about it. I see my OB and MFM every 3 wks. I will see my OB the morning before I leave on the trip. If for ANY reason, she said not to go, I wouldn't.
Any advice? I appreciate your responses in advance.
I stopped all travel at 24 weeks but hated my job so I welcomed the restriction. I would trust your gut - but if you go I would get an idea of where you could go for medical attention around your destination if you needed it. I have heard that some ladies pregnant with twins might get asked for an LOI from their doctor at the airport since you'll probably look very pregnant at 24 weeks. Also, I would suggest that you arrange for an asile seat so you can stretch your legs on the flight. Good luck and I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well.
I agree with tc about going with your gut. I was supposed to fly around 19 weeks and my OB was a little iffy, so we cancelled the trip. When the time came I could have easily traveled, but there was so much walking involved in the trip I was glad I didn't go! At 24 weeks I was put on modified rest due to lots of braxton hicks.
I think most likely you will be fine, you'll just need to get up and walk quite a bit (bathroom trips should take care of that) and drink a ton so you don't get dehydrated. That is a long haul from coast to coast. For me it just wasn't worth it, but it also wasn't my family I was going to visit. I guess a lot depends on how you are feeling now.
My opinion is that you shouldn't do anything that you'll regret later if something bad were to happen afterward. Quite possibly nothing bad will happen, however, why risk it. After what it took to get to this point, is the trip worth all of the worry and stress? Why not have them fly out to see you or fly to see them after the babies are here?

Hi Karin1,
I flew at 27 weeks when I was pregnant with my twins and my OB (and a twins expert) said there was no problem with that. He was fine with me flying up until 30 weeks. But you have to be comfortable with it. I flew an overnight flight to the UK which wasn't a fun ride but we had the time of our life while we were there! We look back on that trip fondly.
My OB told me that I essentially was considered a high risk pregnancy because I was having twins but I was actually a low risk one - no problems at any point along the way so he didn't see a reason for me to not go.
As with you, I had an appointment with him the day before we left so he checked me over knowing I would be gone for 10 days.
If you do go, have fun and if you don't then enjoy your time at home getting ready for the babies!
