Any one done IVF with Sex Selection?

Post by Tamera »

Hi I was wondering if anyone out there has done IVF with sex selection (PGD, sex selection)? I currently have 3 daughters and my husband and I very much want a son, so we plan to go this route in October. I guess my fear is that we only produce female embryos. Just wanted to hear others stories on using sex selection or if its not something that is or is not commonly used?

I know its not legal in all countries, so we will be traveling to have it done. Would love to hear others experiences with PGD. We will also have the PGD testing done because of my age, which will be 42 at the time.

Thanks, some clinics are now offering Microsort: (easier to cut and paste)

Microsort is a technology that sorts sperm into X and Y chromosomes prior to fertilizing the eggs, thus, allowing you to have more male or female embryos after fertilization. Microsort coupled with PGD for gender selection will offer dramatically high chances of success compared to PGD alone.

I feel like at my age I want to have the genetic testing done to ensure a healthy baby. My husband and I feel we got one shot at this, I'm not even gonna cycle until the fall but I find myself stressing all ready, I guess mainly because I'm not as young as I used to be. I read allot on these forums and they have been very helpful to me, I just had not read much about anyone doing PGD testing.

I plan to hang around here and keep reading, this forum is a world of information for a newby like myself. Thanks all.

I've heard of PGD for genetic disorders but not for sex selection. I can see why it's controversial. Best wishes! Where do you have to travel to have it done?

I have to travel to Cyprus, there are clinics in the states that allow it, basically when they do the PGD testing and look at the chromosomes they can also tell the sex of the baby to be, thus allowing you to have male or female embryos implanted.

I had CGH testing done on my embryos. Not for sex selection but just to make sure what i was putting back was normal. I had a choice of what sex I wanted to transfer back. We were transferring two so i just said that i wanted the best put back but if there is a choice for the best then to put back a boy and a girl. We have 3 frosties left and our first frozen transfer the gender will probably be the opposite of whatever gender I am carrying now.

I have not done PGD, but just wanted to wish you well. If you do sex selection, and have embryos that you have no intention of using, then I would encourage you to consider embryo donation. I am not trying to say anything wrong. Our little boy is a product of a very generous couple that donated their embryos to us. Just figured I would mention it. Good luck to y'all.
After 7 attempts (2 negatives/3 miscarriages), we have TWO miracle boys!! If you would like to hear our story, please visit http://www.ivfsuccessstories.info. Never give up, it can happen for you!!

Me and my husband have 3 healthy girls, I do have PCOS but was able to conceive with fertility drugs and had normal uneventful pregnancies. After our third we thought if we had another it would be another girl, so at the time (13 years ago) my husband had a vasectomy. Fast forward and the medical technology has changed so much that now it is possible to have the desired sex of a child you want.

We were originally set on international adoption, but the cost associated with that ($30,000), plus the uncertainty that we decided to try and have another. I will be 42 in October when I have this done and everything I have read is that at that age my chances decline allot. I have had all my pre lab work done AMH was 5.78 and FSH was 7.5, so my doctor feels I still have good ovarian reserve. I am hoping that the fact that I have conceived 3 times with no issues plays in my favor. I do plan to donate any embryos that I do not use. They will all be PGD tested so any not being used I know will be healthy and I would hope can bring a baby to someone who is not fortunate enough to have one.

I plan to hang around here and if everything goes well be involved in a fall cycle group. Wishing everyone the best on there journey's cause it truly is a journey.

It's done in the USA pretty often.

Be aware there will be a slight reduction in pregnancy rate with sex selection. The reason is that sometimes your best embryo is the gender you did not want, so half the time you will not transfer your best embryo. Transferring less than the best embryo means less than the best chance of success. There is also some slight harm from the PGD sampling.

Avoid IVF and surrogacy in Ukraine. Ukrainian centers pay shills to post here under numerous sock accounts pretending to be patients in Ukraine. Centers using such deceptive advertising cannot be trusted and should be avoided.

Hi Tamera,
I'm going through Ivf for sex selection. I have 2 beautiful girls that were concieved naturally, and my husband really wants a boy. It's done here In the US, and will be happy to share with u how everything is going, where and how much it could cost. I only did PGS for sex section ( checking sex chromosome) since I'm 30 years old, but would have done the whole PGD ic I was older. I took fertility drugs, got my eggs retrieved and fertilized, and had only 1 male embryo transferred. I'm lying down while writing this message, bed rest. And I'm very anxious to know if I am
Pregnant a week from now.
Plz wish me luck, and let me know if there's any way I can help,

Thanks for sharing your info, do you mind me asking how many embryos you produced? I do have a big fear of only having girl embryos, so I am hoping to produce some good numbers to make the odds better. We have 3 daughters and do not want another girl. We are also having my husband's sperm sorted (fairly new technology) to try and increase the number of male embryos. Do you mind me asking how much you paid in the states? Mine is costing roughly $10,000 for my treatment, plus I have to pay for meds.

Thanks for any advice/info you can share.

Tamera -- you might find some hostility on this board when you do IVF for sex selection (there has been some major drama in the pas). Might I suggest a website specifically for women trying for a specific sex baby? http://www.in-gender.com
8 IVF+6 FET=6 BFN+8 BFP =

-b/g twins 22w (12.09)
-mc 10w (9.10)
-Micha (7.19-24.11) & Asaf (7.19-28.11) born at 24w
-mc 5wk (2.12)
-no HB at 18w (10.12)
-BO (4.13)-
-mc 6wk (9.13)

last attempt - donor sperm - baby girl born healthy July 2014

Wow that is unfortunate that I would receive hostility about wanting a baby regardless if I want one of a certain gender. I think each person on here wants a baby for many different reasons and I wouldn't be down on someone for there personal choice. I have not received hostility and hope to not, but if it were to happen I'm fairly sure I would just move on since hostility and stress is something that anyone going through IFV (for whatever personal reason) does not need.

I don't judge anyone's choices here and hope they wouldn't judge mine, hope you sending me this link isn't your way of telling me to move to another board, since I have not encountered hostility here as of yet and I have been on these boards for about 5-6 months. Life is about choices and no one should judge anyone about there own choices as long as they are not bringing harm to anyone.

Hi Tamara,
Sorry it took me a while to reply,
My transfer did not result in pregnancy. I had 28 eggs retrieved, 25 were mature, 19 were fertilized with ICSI, 15 made it to the day of PGD test, 6 were male, 6 female, and 3 could not be identified. We discarded the females. We had 1 grade AB male embryo transferred at day 5, but it just didn't attach, and I did not get pregnant. 3 of the remaining male embryos were grade AB and were able to be frozen.
That whole cycle cost was 13500 us $:
9800 for the clinic (excluding blood work and u/s which my insurance paid for)
1000 for "PGD for gender selection" ( it would be 2000 $ more if u choose the whole chromosome testing)
2500 $ for medication
That was end of September.

I started medication 6 weeks after first transfer
We went for a Frozen embryo transfer this month December, we had decided to go through all the embyos one by one ( coz I don't want twins) until I get pregnant. At the day of my transfer, I got a call from the embryologist that none of my embryos survived thawing. The were very good quality AB, but they just didn't make it. The embryologist said this doesn't usually happens, and that we should have at least end up with 1 or 2 that survived the thawing. When I met the doctor at the beginning of the cycle I asked him what are the chances of my embryos surviving thawing, he said it's over 50% for all embryos including not good quality ones, so he predicted the 3 of mine to make it.
Well I'm still a little hurt.
The FET cost is 3100$ ( without tests and ultrasounds)
As for us, we decided to wait a while before trying again, the old fashion way:)
I'll be blessed with any baby boy or girl, I just wanted my husband to enjoy manly activities with a little boy, as much as I enjoy putting nailpolish and having tea parties with our girls.
I wish u all happy holidays and a wonderful Christmas.
