IVF Babies/Pregnancies

Post by onthefence »

This may seem like a silly question, but it has been weighing on my mind:

Are IVF pregnancies and babies just as healthy as those that aren't achieved artificially? It seems as if I have been reading so many heartbreaking stories of babies born sick and premature.

Normally once you get past the first 8 weeks or so and see a HB, the chance of a m/c for IVF is the same as it is in a regular pregnancy. The reason you probably see a lot of horror stories on this site is because IVF people find out they are pregnant a lot earlier then normal people. Normal people might be pregnant and have a m/c and those people didn't even know they were pregnant, just thought their period was late. Another reason you might see more horror stories here is because women doing IVF tend to be older. The older you get the less chance that the eggs are chromosonally normal. So a person might get pregnant with IVF but the odds of a m/c are higher. In the general population without IVF most won't get pregnant on their own at older ages.
