Help, I'm confused???

Post by IWannaBeMommy »

I just read a posting of one of you having an ectopic pregnancy after IVF. I thought with IVF the doctors bypass the tubes??? With the transfer going straight to the uterus? I have had two ectopics first one in 1995 and the second one Nov. 2003. Left side is completely gone the right tube damaged. I'm really scared now. I haven't been on any infertility drugs yet and will be going for my consultation July6.

Hiya

In answer to your question regarding ectopics after IVF - when they transfer the embryos into the uterus they float around for a few days before they implant into the lining of the womb - sometimes it can happen that the embryo implants into the fallopian tube.

I had an ectopic in 1996 and at that time was told my remaining tube was damaged. When I first went for my IVF consultation - they arranged for a laparscopy and hysterscopy which showed I had what they call a hydrosalpinx (sp!) in my remaining tube - this is fluid build up which normally secretes away naturally if the tube is not damaged however it finds it difficult if the tube is blocked. My consultant advised and I had an operation to clip the tube at the top close to the uterus so that 1. the fluid would not secrete into the uterus and hinder the embryos when transferred and 2. avoid the possibility of another ectopic occuring in my damaged tube.

Hope this helps a little .............. it is worth having your remaining tube clipped if the doctor advises this to avoid any problems.

Best of Luck

Thank-you so much for the info. I was really scared. After your consultation, how long did you have to wait before you could start treament?
