Quit Smoking Ciggs 2 months before 1st ivf

Post by JESS FITZ »

Hi
Has anyone heard of IVF failing because of smoking 2 months before IVF? I just went back to the Dr. today after ivf failing in 11/05 He couldnt really give me an answer as to why the ivf failed after it was all going so great and everything looked wonderful to where we thought it would work.
He said maybe because I smoked for 15 years then quit 2 months before I started my ivf that the toxic could have maybe damaged my eggs prior to quitting. HELP!

Me=30 Hubby=39

I personally think he is clutching at straws. I have never read anything with hard proof. I did read an article (at home or I would give you the web page but was on BBC Devon Infertility wbsite I think....) about giving up smoking prior to starting treatment. They said whilst there was no proof or evidence as to why smoking affected treatment a study in Australia showed that some womens uterus lining was a lot thicker that non-smokers. They recommended non-smoking 3 months prior to treatment or less than 10 a day. I have given up at new year for my treatment in July but it is HELL. I have my blips regularly and it is the only thing that keeps me sane. I am determined to stop though so going Dr Monday........

Sorry to hear the news re fist cycle and what a blow the Dr must have given you.

If any one can recommend a site to me or Jess then do.....cheers

I smoked all the way thru my treatment and only gave up smoking on the 2ww. This was both times as I started smoking again when my DD was 3 months old, and then had to quit again in my 2nd 2ww. I smoked 30 a day and looking at my results I dont think smoking damaged my eggs! I was also overweight and ate unhealthy food as I was just not in the mood to cook so lived on takeaways.
I just had the view that if it works it works and I cant do anything to change that. I think its a bit pants of your doctor to tell you that it was the fault of your smoking.
Good luck with future cycles.

Hi Jess

I agree with Susie and Julie, I dont think you Doctor can blame a failed IVF on ciggies.

I smoked for my 1st IVF cycle, through the tmt (but not more than 3 a day) and I had 13 eggs. I did stopped during the 2ww (or maybe 1 or two during 2ww to keep me sane!!)
I did get a BFN, but i am sure there is nothing to do with the ciggies. My uterus lining was nice and thick (from what the doc said!)

I am now going to start my 2nd cycle, and i did stop smoking a couple of months ago. I wanted to stop and the IVF gave me the extra kick to stick to it. I have to say I feel much better, even if sometimes it is hard!!

Dont blame yourself,
take care

I'm sorry, but babies are born every day to crack and heroin addicts, I hardly think the odd fag is going to stop anyone getting pregnant! Your doc can't explain why it didn't work - no one can yet - science hasn't got to that level of sophistication. They don't even know whether smoking damages eggs or not - it's possible, but there's no proof.

Hello! I am new - just posted my introduction. I have smoked since I was 15 and am 36 now. Yes it will be what kills me, but it is a love and hate relationship with my cigs! I am currently doing IVF. My Doc does not know I smoke, because I really don't want a lecture and know that I should quit. My goal is to quit after my transfer and not start again unless I get a negetive result. I know that is is wrong to go thru such a huge procedure and still be smoking, but it helps me get thru it all. I have read the artilces also, but the cases seem small. I think we all know what is best for us. This is such a hard topic because it is so addicting!

Thank you all for making me feel better.... I just felt guilty but, I do know there are so many people that smoke through their pregnancies so I was thinking why would this happen to me when I quit before I started my ivf cycle. And for all those that quit Congrats! because it is not easy. I went back to it after I was told that the IVF failed and then all the holidays were here and i got stressed over everything but, I do need to quit again for my next IVf attempt in March/April. But, after hearing the Dr. saying all that I wouldnt dare tell him I went back to it. lol But, I want to thank all of you and goodluck to everyone I hope this year will be a good one for everybody! I quit three months before my first cycle and I smoked from 15 to 37 years old. Because of the excessive cost of IVF it became enough motivation for me to quit. Now I do not know if it truly helped me become pregnant, but I like to think my hard work paid off.

Best of luck to you in your second cycle!

Herbal remedies are now becoming a very popular choice for those who want to stop smoking. There are several quit smoking supplements and natural remedies that are safe, very effective and also affordable. For those individuals who really want to quit smoking supplements could be one of the most helpful tools you can use if you are finally ready to toss away those nicotine filled cigarettes.

I really don't know about the smoking. It is great that you quit. Just remember that most IVF cycles do fail, especially the first cycle. The doc is figuring out what the best protocol is for you on the first attempt. Consecutive attempts are usually more successful cycles. It took me 6 cycles to have my little boy. Check out my blog for some good info on IVF! (link in sig)
After 7 attempts (2 negatives/3 miscarriages), we have TWO miracle boys!! If you would like to hear our story, please visit http://www.ivfsuccessstories.info. Never give up, it can happen for you!!

I quit smowing in January, first IVF in July and had 33 great quality eggs. Although that cycle failed, I followed up with an FET and have two beautif healthy boys as a result!!

For those having a hard time quitting I highly recommend trying hypnotism. After 13 yeArs of smoking I had my last cig on the way to my hypnotism appt. Never had one since and haven't wanted one either.

Good luck to you all on your journeys!

FAG strange I do not think anyone will stop to get pregnant! Your doc can not explain why it does not work - you can not even - the science has not reached the sophistication.
