I think it's pretty hard not to hit muscle with those long needles. The nurse told me if you give the shot too low, you enter an area where there are a lot of nerve endings, and it hurts worse. My husband gets too low sometimes, and it gets sooooo sore! Usually, though it doesn't hurt much and some times I hardly feel it. I'd call the nurse and have her draw a circle for your friend. That way, it can be more comfortable for you and you won't be as worried.
