Weight Gain with Twins?

Post by tuffy4u »

Anyone have any experience with how much weight they gained with twins? I've had a tough time keeping the weight off with my single pregnancies and I'm scared I'm going to put on way to much now that I'm carrying two. I also don't want to deprive my babies. I am already up about five lbs and I'm only 8.5 weeks. Any experience would help.

Thanks Dallas, that's great 30 lbs. I was 30 lbs at 28 weeks and only had one! I've been trying to cut the carbs and sweets but it's been tough with halloween just passing. Good luck with your twins! :D

Congratulations, first of all!!

There is differing opinions on weight gain with twins. I was worried especially in my first trimester, that I wasn't gaining enough. The book "When you are expecting twins, triplets, and quads" has you worried if you haven't gained 20 lbs by 20 weeks. It insists that you need to gain a lot of weight, and earlier rather than later with an end weight gain of 45-55lbs!

As I am barely 5'1" I was very worried about such an amount of weight, but also worried because I didn't gain a lot early despite eating "well".

My OB was great and very reassuring. As long as the babies are growing well, you will be fine. I would definitely NOT try to restrict your weight gain however. In fact, I started drinking ENSURE to make sure I was getting enough calories and protein for the babies.

For the record, I ended up gaining 35 lbs (although I gave birth at 33 weeks, so it would have been more if I had continued on) after a slow start.

My advice? Eat well--nutritionally. Gentle exercise if you can. Take care of yourself. Don't overdo it. Think positively!

PS. I have lost ALL my weight already at just 4 weeks! Breastfeeding twins is a serious calorie burner. :D

Hi Tuffy - I was wondering the same thing. Thank you for posting the question. I have gained 4 lbs and I am only 7 wks 5 days. Trying to eat healthy but its tough because cooking gives me such a food aversion now and nausea. They should make healthy take out for pregnant people!

Ok I got this book called "when you are expecting twins, triplets or quads" and it says for normal BMI, someone carrying twins should gain 10 lbs by 10 weeks. And that the more you gain early on the better the chance of going the full 37 weeks! Wonder if that is right...

Well I am 11 weeks, haven't weighed myself but pretty sure I am over 10lbs. My belly is huge! Could be because this is my third pregnancy. I usually watch what I eat, low carb but I've been allowing myself to eat more grains at my husband's urging. I don't want to gain to much so i don't get diabetes ( I was border line with the other two) but I also want my twins to be full term. It would also be nice not to have to go on bed rest. So I've been exercising but not my usual strenous routine. My BF is also my OBGYN so I get good advice but it seems what is good for one can be dangerous for another. I'll be following you Bodie since we are so close in due dates. Let me know how you are doing with weight gain, what you are doing for exercise and what you OB says about it.

Tuffy - how are you doing? I've gained another 2 lbs and started wearing maternity clothes. I'm 11 weeks tomorrow.

I had posted my weight previously of 30lbs at 28wks. I am now getting ready to be 34wks and have gained 35lbs. I measure 37wks. My babies are measuring 5lbs each! So of the 35lbs, 10lbs is all baby..plus all of the amniotic fluid, placentas, and extra fluid we carry. Try not to concentrate so much on the numbers, just concentrate on a healthy diet. It will all work out in the end.

I gained right around 42 lbs with my boys. I was induced at 38 weeks and Jaxon and Brady weighed 6'7" and 7'6" respectively. "All day" sickness prevented me from gaining during the first trimester. I ate eggs and toast with butter at least twice a week for breakfast and ate reasonably throughout my entire pregnancy. Meaning I didn't (couldn't  ) overdo it but usually treated myself when having cravings.

Bodie, now I'm fifteen weeks, haven't weighed myself in a week and a half and I was up 14 lbs. Was in maternity clothes well before 11 weeks. Luckily I have clothes in every size from 6-14 so I just pull out a different box as I grow. If I could just gain 42 I would be thrilled! I'm thinking it's going to be fifty plus though.

I also love the name Jaxon, I have been having issues with names for these babies. Can't think of anything I like. Good think I still have time.

All right, I'm at 9 1/2 weeks and I've gained 10 pounds! I'm not surprised - this past week I've been ravenous. According to the book everyone has been referencing I think I'm OK. I'm overweight so my weight gain at 10 weeks is supposed to be 10-13 pounds. My pants were fitting a bit tight when I got pregnant so I'm already in my maternity clothes.

Weight loss Advice Needed:

I am 22 years old married man,
I think I am a little bit overweight,
I want to loose that weight but I don’t like to do exercise or any work out because I don’t have that much time....

Kerpupples, I gained about a pound a week in the first tri. I thought it was high but I'm just going with it now. I am up 30 lbs already at 25 weeks. I wasn't overweight when I got pregnant but had major weight issues after my previous pregnancies so I am thinking it's back to the diet wagon after these twins come out. I'm hoping that I can nurse them to burn a few extra calories! Good luck, my new goal is to stay under 45 lbs......
