Ghost... need you

Post by JenMink55 »

Hi Ghost,

I am currently 9 weeks 4 days pregnant with a Singleton. At 7 weeks 5 days I started spotting, at 8 weeks I was hemorrhaging to the point where blood was literally pouring out of me. I went to the RE and he did an Ultrasound and found my fetus with a strong HB. He did see a Uterine clot however (Subchorionic Hematoma) that was rather large, he gave me a 50/50 chance of the pregnancy continuing. Fast forward to 3 days later and I saw my OB-GYN. He did another US and said the 'clot' was almost completely gone. The fetus still had a strong HB and he said I should be good to go, no worries. Well here I am 1.5 weeks later and I am still spotting!! I also saw the RE on Monday and the baby had a HB of 170 and was measuring perfect. The RE said he saw a little clot left but now much.

My question is-- why does this spotting not stop?? The spotting isn't bright red anymore but it's this awful brown and thick stuff. Sometimes when I pee there is hundreds of little pieces of mucus (brown and red) strands in the toilet (sorry I know this is gross  ) Ghost, I am really concerened. I am almost 10 weeks and wish this would stop and want to know when.

Any advice or knowledge about this? Anybody!!

Hugs
Jennifer

Hi Jen,

Im sorry you are having to go through this! I wanted to ask if your doctor had put you on any kind of bed rest?
I had a large bleed when I was pregnant with my daughter and it ran its course just about like yours. My doctor
told me to lay around on the couch or bed for a couple of weeks and eventually the Subchorionic Hematoma healed
and I stopped spotting and bleeding. I hope Ghost has more information for you!! Good luck and prayers to you and
your precious bean!

Jennifer,

I am so sorry that you are going through this and having to deal with all the stress. Has your OB put you on any precautions? There are differing opinions depending on who you consult with, but at minimum, most believe with a SCH (hematoma) you should be on pelvic rest (no sex, no orgasm) and drink lots of fluid to keep cramps and uterine irritability at bay. Some recommend bed rest, but others say it doesn't help.

The good news, from my research, is that most women with a SCH go on to complete their pregnancies and deliver healthy full-term babies.

For me, my experience was very scary and stressful for the majority of my pregnancy. I started bleeding soon after we heard our two little HB's at 7 weeks. I had a 'big' bleed with lots of red blood, and then brown bleeding for days. I bled off and on until I was almost 20 weeks. Most of that time it was brown blood, but I had a fair amount of it and had to wear pads day and night. For me, there was a clear correlation between my activity level and my bleeding. As a result, I was on strict bedrest after red bleeds (one time I bled so hard and so much I went to hospital in the night convinced I had m/c) and modified bedrest when I had brown bleeds. Lots of women do not do any bed rest with brown blood and do fine. This was my last shot at pregnancy and I wasn't taking any chances. I had to feel as though I had done everything possible. And, as I mentioned, for me--when I was more active I bled more so I felt better doing the bed rest.

I did push fluids and drank as much water as I could. I joined an online support group (thanks Leora for recommendation!) through BabyCenter dot com. It was mostly helpful to talk with other women going through the same thing, but it was also upsetting with other women freaking out and especially when someone had a loss. I was so worried that I was going to be next. May or may not be helpful for you.

Try to take it easy. No heavy lifting, no sex, and drink lots of water. Try to think positively and focus on the fact that most women have success.

I was also told that the amount of bleeding doesn't exactly correlate to the size of the hematoma--which is wierd--but seemed to be most women's experience on the other website. Some would have huge hematomas and hardly bleed at all and some would have small hematomas and bleed a ton.

Mine shrunk and shrunk and thinned out. Once you hit second trimester they worry about it causing placental abruption, but if your OB is watching you carefully they can make sure all is well there. My OB was the best. Whenever I had a red bleed they would do an u/s to reassure me. I was seen every 2 weeks throughout my pregnancy except towards the end when I was seen weekly and then more often (but that was because of twins and then pre-E).

Jen--hang in there. Do your best to stay positive and to take it easy the best that you are able. (((HUGS))) as you move through this.

OH! I also got a dopler for like $50. It was VERY reassuring to me to be able to find at least one HB--usually both. However, you do have to be careful not to get too stressed out over it if you get it as you are not always able to find the HB reliably even when all is ok.

I hope that some of this was helpful. These things are weird and unpredictable. It is soooo frustrating that not more is known about them or how to treat them. But you can get through it.

Best of luck with your pregnancy!!!

Sometimes heavy bleeding indicates pregnancy loss and sometimes it does not. Some with heavy red bleeding, soaked in blood, keep the pregnancy and have the baby. It is very traumatic for them, though.

I don't really know why it continues. I'm sure it's a good sign that it's declined.

Good luck.

Jen,

I had the same thing with my first pregnancy. Scared the crap out of me. The bleeding slowly went away but I did spot until 26 weeks. My baby was healthy and is now almost four. I did have issues with my placenta after birth, it didn't come out right due to the bleeding. They had to do a manual extration and I bled for six weeks after she was born. Good luck, I'm sure everything is fine.

Thanks everybody for sharing your stories. My friend Happy Bunny had a good suggestion- pee in the dark and wear dark underwear. I guess that is what I plan on doing

Dear Jennifer
spotting usually stop within 2-3 weeks though sometimes it persist for a longer period
Your ultrasound scan has already demonstrated a viable pregnancy which is very good news
Wishing you the best of luck with your pregnancy
