Congrats to all of the new mom's!!

What a crazy week! Matthew was diagnosed with jaundice, so we had to take him back to the hospital for phototherapy to bring his numbers down. We have been to the doctor's almost every other day, his poor feet have turned into pin cushions. But he is doing much better and even has passed his birth weight!

Here is my birth story if you are interested, sorry that it is so long:
I started feeling a little off Saturday morning, and I noticed I was losing my mucus plug. As the day went on I started really feeling contractions around 3 in the afternoon. But since they were all over the place and DH wasn't feeling well, he went to lay down while I paced the house timing the contractions. Around 10:30 at night I noticed I was bleeding a lot and by 11 the contractions were almost every 5 minutes.

I put a call in to my doctor and he said to come in to the hospital in the next hour or two if the contractions didn't get farther apart. So DH packed his bag and off we went to the hospital a little after midnight on New Year's Day. They checked me and I wasn't dilated but I was bleeding a lot, they said I shouldn't worry that much because there was mucus mixed in it. They said they would check me again at 6 AM to see if I had made any progress. They gave me some meds to help me sleep and at 6 AM they checked me and I still hadn't dilated, but I was having strong contractions. The doctor came to check me and he said it looked like my cervix was scarred and that was why I wasn't dilating. I have no idea how that happened since I never had surgery on it. He said because I was still bleeding they didn't want to send me home, even though my contractions were no longer 5 minutes apart. They broke my water and the fun began :) Two hours later I was 3.5 cm dilated and I was able to get an epidural. I was so petrified of the epidural but it was totally painless and once the meds kicked in I had no idea when I was contracting.

They like to prop you to one side when you have the epidural, and the side that is not elevated goes numb. Well little Matthew did not like it when my right side was propped up and not flat, his HR would really drop. So they made me lay on my right side. That side got so numb, it was crazy.

The entire time I was joking around with the staff and our families but around 3 PM I felt more serious and focused. When they came to check me I was 7.5-8 CM dilated. Not long after that I was at 10 and it was time to push. I wasn't making the kind of progress my doctor wanted so he said if I didn't deliver in the next 45 minutes he would recommend we proceed with a forceps delivery. It wasn't what I had envisioned, but I knew it was the best way to get Matthew out safely since my pushing wasn't doing it. 45 minutes came and went and it was time for the doctor to intervene. I was then told that I only had a few tries at pushing otherwise they will have to do a c-section. I pushed through two contractions with all that I had, but he still wasn't coming out. My nurse said let's push just once more even though it wasn't a contraction and I pushed with every ounce of strength I had and Matthew was born! He cried immediately and I couldn't stop crying. They suctioned his nose and mouth and put him on my stomach to finish cleaning him up. When they went to take him to be weighed and measured my doc informed me that I had a third degree tear. An hour later, I was all stitched up and I was finally able to hold Matthew. He was so handsome!

Since he was the first baby born in the new year at our hospital we were contacted by the local paper and Matthew got a lovely gift basket from the hospital. Here is a link to the article if you are interested.

Addy!!! What a terrific article and a gorgeous family! so glad you shared. Lucky dog, having the newspaper memorialize this event for you. Very cool. I also enjoyed the birth story and it wasn't too long at all. I am sure that there is even more you can share but didn't... I know that was the case for me. Sorry to hear about the tear. All I can say is OUCH!

Evelyn has jaundice too but we are just feeding like crazy and monitoring it for now. I also haver her nap in the window during the day. I though she looked a little better today. I hope it continues. And I also hope that Matthew also kicks his to the curb soon.

Addy: Great write-up! Thx for sharing your birth story!

Dallas: Pre-e is very common for IVFers, especially for ED . . . I was on blood pressure meds after my daughter's birth . . . hope all is getting better =)

Ester: I don't get disability since teacher don't pay into it, so I have to use all my full sicks days, then half days . . . I believe I get 10 weeks paid (it depends on how long your doctor will approve your leave -- my doc approved ten weeks) . . . I only have two weeks saved though, since I had DD not too long ago . . . so most of my time away will be half days, but fortunately, my mom is giving me some $$$$ so I can stay with DS longer . . . I will also take two weeks of baby bonding time (unpaid, but benefits still given) and then come back to school after spring break in april . . .

Wishing: Personally, I feel that it is a racket. I mean, if you have 3-4 grand lying around and want to spend it, then I guess it's okay . . . but it just seems like the chances of actually needing it are so rare . . . and because IVF is so $$$$, we passed . . .

Alissa: sorry to hear about the jaundice, but it's only temporary . . . glad to hear you and Evie are home!

AFM: u/s went well yesterday . . . baby is measuring in the 70% percentile (6 lbs 14 oz) . . . he's two pounds heavier than DD already! Due to some of blood level being high, I'm doing some non-stress tests starting next week . . . last day of work is tomorrow . . . woo-hoo! :)

For those of you who have delivered...what advice do you have for the other ladies on the board? For you ladies and gent in waiting, what part of the birth experience is most important to you and why?

An extra question this week... I can't imagine carrying on list mistress duties at this point. It isn't a huge chore, but having this little one is. I can email the body of the list to someone who can easily cut and paste updates...do I have any volunteers?

CRASHING**

DALLAS: I haven't gone back to read your whole story, but I too suffered with pre-E with my twins. I was hospitalized with it right before they decided to come early. My BP was through the roof like yours, and I usually have very low BP so it was really scary for me. I, too, thought it would quickly resolve after delivery. I was shocked and so upset that 3 days after they were born, my BP was still sky high and I weighed more than I had right BEFORE delivery. I was ao swollen with fluid it was gross. I stayed in the hospital another 3 days, and then was discharged on BP medication. My babies were in NICU at the time and I seriously had trouble walking to and from the unit because my feet and legs were so swollen. But, after a few more days, the water started to come off and in one week I lost 25lbs!! All water of course, but I felt so much better. By my 6 week check up I had lost another 10lbs and my BP was completely normal. Hang in there. Don't overdo it. Keep an eye on your BP, but with time all should be well. AND-_CONGRATS on your beautiful babies!!! Enjoy every minute--twins will keep you busy and on your toes, but loving every minute. PM me if you want.

Welcome NY!!! What an exciting journey you are on and I am so glad your LO is finally on the way. We have another csurrogate with us as well- Dagondad76 as well as a Secret Surrogate (birthmother of Katie's first adopted daughter is due in February). We are thrilled to add you to the fun!

I am a bad one for advice...I had Gestational Diabetes and I also had her prematurely due to a threatening abruption. I could create a list of what NOT to do...which at the top of the list is DO NOT eat for 2 in the first trimester. ;-)

Congrats!

Welcome NY4th! During my first pregnancy and this one, I didn't take any supplements other than a prescribed prenatal. A few dietary things that I do (while pregnant or not) that have probably helped me stay healthy are A) drink a lot of water, B) eat plain oatmeal for breakfast, C) eat from scratch, home cooked meals and D) go to bed early. I do that stuff anyway but it's extra important to take good care of one's body during pregnancy.

Question of the Week: My OB and I have the same attitude toward delivery... Don't make any plans, just take things as they come because things so rarely go as planned. I didn't get caught up in any specific sequence of events for Brooke's birth, I just let things go and I wasn't disappointed. I suggest you just relax, take things as they come, adjust to things that you don't expect and don't worry... No matter what happens, you're going to remember it as the most amazing day of your life.

AFM: I had my first OB appointment today. My little passenger was kicking and waving. The baby looks great and I'm healthy so I couldn't be happier.

Welcome Alexis and NY! Happy to see a few more people on that will be welcoming their babies this summer!

Loving the birth stories and baby pictures - such an exciting time!

Ester- thanks for sharing the info on cord blood banking - I was wondering about that too

Dallas - hope your pre eclampsia goes away soon - I love your baby names!

Deftonesmo - sounds like you are getting very close - good luck to you!!

AFM - went to my first appointment at the perinataly office yesterday. I was really impressed with the level of service - I was barely in the waiting room - as soon as I sat down they called my name (didn't even get a chance to fill out the forms). First I had an U/S - it was an external one instead of the internal probe - so it looked cloudy to me but we could still see the 3 babies in there bouncing around - I think they enjoyed their lunch! The U/S tech asked me about spotting and then pointed out the hematoma in there - it was about the same size as one of the baby's sacs - seems very big to me but no one seemed overly concerned about it. They said it may either cause more spotting or possibly will be re-absorbed by my body. When I met with the dr, she pretty much just asked me about how I was feeling and what questions I had. I think I was expecting them to give me more info on what to do/not to do. Then they did a quick check of my lungs/heart/stomach and I was on my way. I don't go back again until Feb - so it will be a few weeks before I get to see the babies again :(

Other than that, I'm feeling ok - just tired and hungry but having a hard time finding foods that sound appealing. Not much besides carbs and dairy are sitting well with me. Also, I feel like I have a bad aftertaste in my mouth most of the time - even when I haven't eated anything recently :( Counting down to the weekend - looking forward to a few quiet days! I ordered some books on multiples from amazon that have arrived so I'll be diving into to learn more on what to expect!

Question of the week- I think the most important part of the birth experience will be finally meeting the babies for the first time.I know there are many other critical things that lead up to that, but that is the part that makes all of the rest of it worth it!

Barbara- Oh My Gosh! I remember that ultrasound...the one where the baby actually begins looking like a baby...HOW PRECIOUS! Also, the pic of Brooke in your ticker is so perfect I would swear that she was a little baby model. I am really jealous and inspired by you. For the last 6 days I have been thinking about going back to work (or thinking about not wanting to since I travel so much and will have to leave her). I was joking with DH that if we got pregnant again right away I could have another 3 month "vacation" and enjoy the new baby and Evelyn and just keep having more so I could do it again. :) Hmmm...maybe we will get going on number 2 when I heal.

Kbillsy- your ticker is too cute for words! I recall what it is like to know that the number of visits and ultrasounds are dwindling down and I too was surprised at my first appointment that it was sort of in, out, done. For me, there really wasn't a lot of advice given, just the standard visit and an opportunity to ask questions. So like you I took most of the education into my own hands and read everything I could get my hands on about pregnancy. I think I must have been Amazon's Customer of the Year. Sounds like we have that in common.

AFM- Took Evie to the doctor today because she had a dusky blue hue around her mouth for the last two days. I was a little scared but not really because I had done a lot of research already to know that it could be very serious, but can also be very common in new babies, especially those that are a little early. When I called the doc they were adamant I bring her in right away. Her oxygen levels and pulses were all excellent and her jaundice is all but gone. Doc says that the blue is caused by her circulatory system intermittently having challenges taking over running her body and that it typically will last a few weeks until things normalize. We just monitor her and wait I guess. She is super pink and perfect everywhere else. Anyway, we actually went out to lunch with the baby after the appointment. We went to a Chinese restaurant in town where we knew we would likely be the only customer (it is flu season you know :-)). The owner bought us our lunch since it was our first day out. I ended up having to eat and feed at the table. Daddy ended up changing a diaper in the booth. It was fun! Glad we were the only ones there.

So much going on looks like we have lots of healthy babies being born and lots of freshly preggers mamas getting ready for the next chapter in carrying a LO....what fun....I have the early ultrasound on my fridge & it is my favorite because she is looking right at us and waving with her legs crossed so stinking cute....

Wanted to reach out to NY4thtry first off CONGRATULATIONS......the birth mom of my daughter is pregnant and we are adopting this baby too so we call her our secret surrogate after 4 MC's between the beginning of 2011 and the end of 2010 we were ready to give up but our little miracle is almost here. As far as what supplements etc.....I have absolutely no control over what my SS eats, drinks takes or does to her body....but every day I look at my perfect daughter who is smarter than your average LO, has 5 perfect fingers, 5 perfect toes is on target for all her milestones and loves me with all her little heart and makes me laugh everyday. Your situation is different since you have an actual surrogate and you definitely have the right to give her some guidelines (I have no rights!) but even if she slips up or doesn't do exactly what you want her to do my gut feeling is that the LO's are always OK....after all my Mom drank martinis & smoked cigs when she was pregnant with me! I agree with Happy Bunny....drink lots of water and get lots of rest. I am so excited to follow your story & watch your LO's develop and grow and all the fun milestones ahead :-D
