Cotbeds vs Cots

Post by MichelleA »

Hi Girls
I wonder if any of you can help. We're just in the process of trying to choose a cot and we can't decide whether we should get a cotbed or a cot. Having spoken to our friends we seem to be getting a mixed response and we can't decide.
Any thoughts please would be really helpful and appreciated.
Hope you are all really well.
Love, Miche xxx
Our darling son Jake was born in October 2004 on our 3rd IVF attempt. I have PCOS. We're now trying again naturally, before embarking on our next FET IVF possibly late 2005... so watch this space!!!

Our 2 are going in a room together to begin with and its not that huge so we didn't want to fill it up with 2 cotbeds as they tend to be bigger than cots. However, we wanted something that would be useful. So we've gone for the Stokke cot/cotbed. They start as a cot (oval shape) so are a nice small size, then when they get to toddler stage you add extra sections to increase the size of the cot so making it into a bed. It's supposed to last many years as it can have the sides removed and so used as a junior bed too, then later the 2 halves can separate and become chairs. They were more pricey than any other cotbed, but hopefully they will last much much longer.

Hi Michelle. We used a Moses baskety-type thing initially but when we moved home and Maya moved into her own room (at 3m), she started sleeping in a cot. We did look at cotbeds but like you thought about the space and I also wasn't sure about what style room I might want later. We bought a relatively plain pale beach wood with 2 wider panels in the sides. I'm not sure sure I'd recommend getting a cot with these now (vs. a cot with standard width slats all the way though). Now that she can twist and kick the wider boards, they act like a drum!!!!

Helen Louise I'm so envious of your Stokke cots. I think they are BEAUTIFUL. Even though I virtually live next door to Denmark, they cost the earth here. Sigh....how lovely!!

hugs,
Debra.

Stokke cots - yummy - I wish

We have gone for cots as there are two of them and the room issue but if we had known it was twins (we already had a cot bought for Oliver just before he died) we would have gone for cot beds to convert and save getting more beds. With a singleton I would go for a cot and then get them a bed so i could use the cot for number two

Good luck

Florence and Amelia both have cotbeds. They do take up quite a bit of space in their nursery - they are sharing at the moment, whilst their own bedrooms are being built, so hopefully by the time they go in them space won't be an issue. At the moment they sleep in their carrycots (from their bugaboos) in my room. I've tried introducing the cotbeds for the daytime naps but the girls are not too keen. I think the main reason is they like the security of the small carrycot and because they are still so tiny the cotbeds seem huge! But as my dh insisted they will not be tiny for long and the cotbeds seem to make the most economical sense because they last until the children are about 4 or 5yrs.

Happy shopping!

Nikola

Sorry but since when has economy come into things when you go shopping - I know DH likes economy and starts at the cheaper end of things whilst you veer to the right to the most expensive. Suppose they are having their own wing

Only jealous - ignore me - hope to see you soon

Nikola, I'm sure you've already thought of this but do you put the carrycots on/in the cotbeds for their naps? I did this with our Moses basket to help the baby get used to the room and also so she got used to seeing the slats/wood etc. We were also leant a rocking cot which we used for a bit but I'm a HUGE Gina Ford fan and didn't want to start a sleep association of rocking.

I hope your tiny girls are doing well.
love
Debra.
