Hello, can anyone who knows please explain to me why do we need progesterone support in Fresh IVF cycles?? While in a natural cycle , where u dont even know that u r pregnant, dont need the Progesterone support! Even though in fresh ivf cycles, we ovulate and everything same as a natural cycle.

Hi, i asked my clinic this and the reply was it was precautionary just to help. You do produce progesterone through a fresh IVF cycle.
My clinic use cyclogest pesseries and i just took one a day on my fresh cycle, 2 a day on my FET.

beachbaby - thank u for the answer, can i ask, in ur frsh ivf cycle u took only one cycloget pessarie per day, meaning only 400mg of pregesterone per day???
and did u do PIO shots also or it was only one cyclogest pessarie per day?

Success rates are better if progesterone is given. Some clinics cut costs by omitting it.

Some clinics also give estradiol. Estradiol reduces bleeding in early pregnancy, but has not been shown to improve success rates.

I have always heard that in a natural cycle (not IVF) your body produces the progesterone that it needs but this doesn't happen during an IVF cycle until the placenta takes over at around 10 weeks (not sure about the weeks). Even though our cycles may "seem" normal during IVF, they are not happening naturally so the drugs are needed to help mimic a natural pregnancy. Maybe I am wrong, that is just what I have always heard. Good luck to you!!

It depends on the route of administration. If it's injected, less is needed than with vaginal forms. Typical pessaries would need the most, and 400mg per day or more is common here. It's sometimes used along with injections. There are also Crinone and Endometrin. Each has its advantages. The injections, for example, are cheap and effective, but can be painful after awhile.

How much is sufficient for you is up to your doctor.

Crinone is 90mg per application. But it's much more effective than 90mg of pessaries because the absorption is better. One Crinone application per day is the manufacturer's recommendation for a fresh non-donor cycle. For other cycles (donor, FET), they recommend two per day. The difference is that in a fresh non-donor cycle, there is usually some follicular (corpus luteum) activity producing some progesterone, but usually not in donor or FET.

200mg pessaries 3 times per day is in the range of typical dosage for that type of progesterone supplement.
