More blood tests at 16 weeks? what are these about?

Post by caz1 »

HI there
Just wondering if anyone can help.
Did anyone have further blood tests done at 16 weeks - ish?

I have read about (and THINK am likely to be advised to have) the AFP test - which tests for Downs Syndrome and Spina Bifida
I thought I'd gone through this hurdle with the nuchal scan and double bloods at 12 weeks. Do I really need to have these too, are they standard if things were okay at 12 weeks??
Did you guys have them??
Any words of wisdom - as always gratefully received!!
Thankyou!

Hi Caz...I'll start my 20th week on Thursday. I also did the Nuchal Scan at twelve weeks along with the integrated blood work the same day. (Maternal Serum Screening). I did have to go back during the 16th week to complete the blood tests for this. They said they take the results of the Nuchal and the combined blood tests and come up with a formula to tell you the statistics or odds. For example, after the blood tests and Nuchal the office called me (only a few days after the 2nd set of blood tests) to say there was a 1 in 10,000 chance of Downs, 1 in 10,000 chance of Trisomy 18 and a 1 in 1,300 chance of neural tube defects. This was quite reassuring, but the worrying never stops!!! All came back normal, but with twins they said the results are not as accurate as with a singleton. We are blessed with identical girl twins due on Dec. 15.

Good luck!!!

Hi Caz
Yes its normal to have blood tests done at 16wks but you can decline to have them done as we have as if they came back high risk I wouldnt want to risk a amnio so we thought why put ourselves through more worry but its a personal choice but you can decline if you want.
When I told my midwife she said she understood why as they arent very accurate.

Caz

Like I said having had the nuchal then the bloods just add to it. In themseleves they are not as good as the tests you have already have and as Gem says can be inaccurate. If you are happy with your nuchal risk which was very good I would not bother.

Hope this helps
