Can anyone give me some advise please

Post by emmalouise »

Hiya :D Can anyone tell me their experiences with the following drugs:- Burserelin injection and Synarel nasal spray. And also Puregon and menopur.

I am wanting to find out about the side effects people have experienced whilst taking these treatments. I am soooo nervous about starting treatment and am not sure which combination I should take.

Was anyone else terrified of taking the drugs, or am I the only person. I am really worried about it already. Can anything bad happen to you from taking them. I'm aware of ohss, but is there anything else that can happen to you?

Also, After being on the nhs waiting list a year(it's a 4yr wait in total) my partner and I have decided to go private. I have spoken to ivf clinic today and they have told me I will have egg transfer in December. What I was wondering is, if I have egg transfer in December, what kind of time will I begin downregulation etc? Will it be about a month before?

Hope someone can give me some advice. Look forward to hearing from you. Emma x

Hi there Emma

Please - don't be so worried about the meds. I'm downregging on Buserelin at the moment. The side effects can be mood swings, and/or hot flushes (as your body kind of goes into a mini menopause), although I haven't had any side effects (not this time, nor the last cycle) - except swollen nipples (sorry - TMI !). I haven't taken the other drugs you've mentioned, but lots of other girls on here have.

I wasn't scared of the drugs ... just the needles ! ... but they really are nothing. They're so tiny. After the first injection, you don't ever think about them.

Re the timescale from downreg to embryo transfer ... as you'll see if you read some of the threads, there are so many different protocols and also everyone responds to the drugs at different rates, so this also makes the timescale vary.

With me, I start downreg on day 21 (day 1 being AF, or first day of bleed). Carry on downreg until next AF starts. Then 4 days later start stim drugs for about 10 (ish) days. Then egg retrieval, then a couple of days later embryo transfer. The whole cycle only takes about 25 days, but it seems like months !!

Hope this eases your mind a little. I'm sure you'll have more replies re the other drugs.

Hello Emma

Welcome to the website. There are so many lovely people on here and you will get so much from it.

I have had 4 treatments and used most of the drugs you have listed.

I have used Synarel spray and it takes a few minutes before you get a rather bitter taste in the back of your throat. It only lasts a few mins but you get used to it. The side affects can be from slight headaches to feeling a bit off colour. It is a suppressant and puts you through a menopause for a few weeks. You can become a bit irritable and have flushes but this has never happened to me.

Buserelin injections are the same as sniffing but you inject them twice a day morning and evening. The injection site can get a bit hot and itchy but thats about it. You can get the same side affects as Synarel but it is diffrent in everyone.

Puregon - These are the stimulating drugs to stimulate you ovaries to produce more than normal follicles. Once again the injection site is a bit itchy and hot but only for a few mins. This is the time when you will start to feel a bit bloated and get some twinges as your ovaries are getting bigger. You must drink lots of water as the follicles will be filling with fluid taken from your body and needs to be replaced. It is especially important to drink like a fish after egg collection as this is when OHSS can really kick in and you will de-hydrate.

I have not used Menopur but have been told it has the same affects as Puregon.

If your EC will be in Dec it will depend on what length protocol you will be on. Some TMT's can last a month or just over and others can be longer or a lot shorter. That really hasn't helped you has it but you will need to find out what your protocol is going to be.

Wishing you loads of luck and hope all your dreams come true,

Love Dagny xkx

Hi Emmalouise,

I was also very nervous about starting ivf.

(even so nervous that I insisted on 6 extra treatments IUI in natural cyclus).

not afraid of pain or needles but about the effect of the hormons!

and i must admit, my dh can agree: I am a angry person then, who cries a lot, feeling a pain in the ass (and probalby am) I feel very sorry for my self then....and 10 minutes later I am laughing out loud....

it is all for the purpose of this whole enterprise: a baby! and that is (for me) what counts.

for me it is the only way.... so I (not not only I) have to endure ....

I understand your feelings, I had the same....

good luck! and don't let my story scare you!

Hi Emma Louise, welcome to the site.

I've had 2 full ivfs, one natural FET and one medicated FET. Both ivfs used Synerela (as it's known here) and Puregon. The sniffing is obviously less painful than any injections but can worry people who sneeze alot or aren't sure if enough went up! The Puregon I've always found a cinch - except the first time when I was scared if it would hurt. It doesn't and very quickly injecting becomes a no-brainer. I've had mood swings, headaches, hot flushes (not many and not obvious to other people), sweats at night and a bloated feeling, but nothing worse. None of which are remotely important. You'll soon realise most of us are here are very determined people!

Again, welcome and feel free to post/ask/comment about anything you wish.

Good luck
Debra.

Hi Emma

I'm glad you are feeling a bit calmer about your treatment now. I am sure there will be a few more posts from other girls telling you not to worry. It's a bumpy old rollercoaster doing IVF but most of us hsve survived after many goes and we come back for more.
