Length of stay in intensive care for twins

Post by Sophie23 »

I’m pregnant with twins and I just learned that our insurance (bupa) won’t cover the babies care for the first 90 days after birth because they were conceived with fertility treatment.
Can anyone tell us how long one or both of your twins were in intensive care? And does anyone know what the potential cost of this might be? Any other advice is welcome!

First off...congrats!!!!!
Second...are you kidding me with your insurance???? I would certainly be trying to fight that. How on earth can they justify that???
Third...my twins were born a 34 weeks and spent 11 days in NICU. My insurance covered their stays, but I do remember their bills being about $70,000 each.

Is that even legal that they can do that? Crazy?! Only thing I can think of is to go to the hospital where you are planning to deliver and ask their advice about your options. I'm sure they have billing specialists who might have some experience with this sort of thing
Me/DH 36
1 tube/low morph
TTC since 2008 only one spontaneous in 2012
Ivf 1-1/2009 DS
FET- miscarried
Ivf 2.- 10/11 DS
12/12 miscarried (spontaneous pregnant, so cliche minus the miscarriage part)
Now--- back to TTC at home in hopes for a final addition

Thanks so much to everyone for the information and support. It means so much.
We spoke to a lawyer who told us that what Bupa's policy is legal and there is little we could probably do about it. I currently live abroad, so now I'm working on going to America to try to get on Medicaid. We just can't risk having such a large hospital bill.

Thank you again for the valuable information and support!

That sounds like a good idea unless of course you are also a citizen anywhere else that has universal coverage. WIll you meet the income requirements for medicaid? (sorry that is a very personal question) but i just wanted to mention it since I wasn't sure you were aware that they have them. I don't know exactly what they are but they also will count any assets you have (home and/or car). Good luck to you!!!
