‘We spent over £20,000 on failed IVF attempts at home, before getting success abroad first time’
After spending more than £20,000 on four failed IVF cycles, Chris and Sarah Burgess were running out of time and money in their determination to have children.
The couple, from Colwyn Bay in north Wales, married in 2005 and wanted to start a family straight away, which was problematic given Chris had had a vasectomy before they met and a reverse vasectomy was only partially successful.
“We were advised that a natural conception would be difficult, if not impossible. The clock was ticking and if were going to do something it would have to be assisted reproduction,” Chris, 67, tells i. Their first attempt using IVF failed in March 2007. They tried again using frozen embryos stored following the first “fresh” cycle, but that produced the same result.
Another two cycles failed the following year. “At that point we were getting a bit desperate and disillusioned,” says Chris. “A consultation with a specialist told us we were ‘scraping the bottom of the barrel’, when it came to the amount of eggs Sarah was producing, so we started looking online to see what else we should do.”
NICE guidelines state that women aged under 40 who have failed to get pregnant after 2 years of trying should receive three full cycles of IVF treatment, and 1 full cycle for some women aged 40-42. But NHS rationing has resulted in a postcode lottery leaving some women living in areas where no funding for IVF is offered. Most areas offer at least 1 cycle.

Avoid IVF and surrogacy in Ukraine. Ukrainian centers pay shills to post here under numerous sock accounts pretending to be patients in Ukraine. Centers using such deceptive advertising cannot be trusted and should be avoided.

Thanks Ghost for sharing this success story. I'm sure a lot of people will find new hope in this new year once they come across this news. Just like I mentioned in another post somewhere that reproductive tourism is getting too prominent to quick... that can't really happen without a pressing reason. All of it must be out of some improvements in rate of success and all that including the affordability that making people opt for it - out of desperation steps couldn't initiate so huge a response.
Its not just here but I find a lot of posts related to IVF and surrogacy abroad that were successful. I was recently going through a post where the lady complain about the age rule that NHS has (in some other forum) - her first IVF failed and she is 36 so anything further has to be self-funded. She is concerned that they almost arranged a donor for eggs and now they simply can't go on with the treatment. I think reproductive tourism is a hope for these women, they at least have an option now than choosing between broke and childless future. However, I agree one needs to be very careful while choosing both the country and the clinic for a successful outcome. The spending won't be any good if there's no success and to get to bring back the baby the land laws must be smooth too - some clinics as far as I've read assist with the legal proceedings too. So yeah, anyone out there who though the recurring failures is where it all ends.. just look beyond and I''m sure you'll find a way out if you look for one.

I have also read lots of articles about affordable IVF at overseas clinics abroad. Myself I know a few ladies with first time success at IVF clinics in Zlin (Czechia) and Gdansk (Poland)
