Hi everyone, I am nearing the end of my first pregnancy and I have started having these deep, sharp groin pains over the past few days. They are so severe I can't continue standing. The pain basically radiates through my inner thighs and groin area. It goes away when I am lying down, but sitting sometimes isn't enough. Anyone else have these before? Does anyone know what is going on?
Thanks for any help!

I have been getting that since about 16 weeks. I mentioned it to the physio at my antenatal class and she said that it was common. Its the symphisis pubis joint straining. She suggested trying to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and to "brace" before you do any movement (roll in bed, stand from sitting, etc) by bracing she said to clench both the pelvic floor muscles and the lower abdominal muscles together as you move. I have been doing it and found it helps. Also avoid any movement that involves spreading your legs too wide. So get into the car like a "lady" with your knees tucked together.
Hope this helps,
Em

Thanks for the suggestions ladies! This site really is so helpful. I knew someone else must have had these problems. I will try your suggestions Em, and see how it goes. My next appointment is in a couple of days and I will talk about it with my midwife as well.
I just keep thinking, can't she just come on out?! That should help, right?
Good luck to you all with your pains and discomforts as also!

Em has described it really well. I suffered with it when I had Jodie. I used to be in agony and was unable to walk. My midwife referred me to physio and it seemed to help.
Not long now until she's out. Enjoy the last few weeks you have, you'll soon be missing your bump!

Hi Jo, thanks for writing. Do you all mind me asking (I know I sound crazy), but what is a physio? We don't use that word here in the States. Is it a physical therapist, or are you referring to your OB? I thought about seeing my chiropractor.
I did some web based research on the condition and it sounds like it is the problem. It was surprising for me to find that almost all of the info I found were sites from the UK. I wonder if they dismiss it too often in the States as a typical sign of pregnancy or as round ligament pain.
Jo, you mentioned you had it with Jodi. Did you have problems when you were carrying Ellie?
Does anyone know how long did it take for the pain to go away after the baby is born? Is it something I will need to worry about for later, or will it be better after my baby is born?
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks for all of your help.

Yes, a physio is a physiotherapist. I would see them over a chiropracter though as they are well trained to deal with muscules as well as the joints. What you need is the right type of exercises to strengthen your pelvic muscles to support your pelvic joints. A chiropractor will offer to manipulate your spine but that will have little benefit in your case and perhaps a little dangerous when you are pregnant. It stands to reason that the minute your baby is born, the strain will be off your joints and the pain will disappear. At least that is what I am praying for!
Do you have physio advice as part of your antenatal classes? It is routine here in Oz and has been so much help in dealing with other common pregnancy related issues such as bladder control, sciatica relief, massage during labour and even how to get a good nights sleep when you are enourmous!
Best of luck!

I don't remember being in pain after the birth so it must have gone pretty much straight away or, after having a section I had other pain to worry about!
I never suffered with it when I was pregnant with Ellie but then she came at 26 weeks, I didn't get the problem with Jodie until after that.
The only other advice I would offer you now is just sit back and relax, enjoy these last few weeks. You have done so well in getting this far, I didn't even make it to the third trimester!
Take care and good luck
Jo

I will talk to my midwife tomorrow at my appoinment. I suspect she will tell me it is just a pain of pregnancy and it will go away after the baby is born. I can handle resting until then, I just wanted to hear that it will be better after she is born. I can't get around at all right now, but I will have to be able to move with a newborn!
Here we do take childbirth classes, but each one is different. I chose to take a prepared childbirth class that was more informative about the process of childbirth and ways that women handle it (meds, breathing techniques, massage therapy, yoga, etc). My midwife taught it, and we did not have anything as wonderful as you all have with a physio there. My class covered less about pregnancy and more about delivery. It sounds like you are more advanced there with all of that help and info.
Thanks again for all of your help ladies. I'll let you know how it goes...

Hey girls, me again! I had my appointment yesterday and the midwife did say that the SPD is probably what is going on. She said she had it with her 3rd child and she could write me a perscription for pain meds. I didn't want that, so I told her I would continue to stay off my feet and try to suck it up. She said hers went away after the baby was born, so that is what I am hoping for. I guess we'll see about help if it doesn't go away.
On the brighter side, I am officially at a station zero, 70% effaced, and a "loose 1" dilated. So hopefully things will roll along soon enough and it won't be much longer. I'll try to enjoy my bump here on the couch until then!
Thanks again for all of your help. I hope you are all doing well and enjoying your pregnancies and/or babies.
Take care.

I visited my doctor when i experienced pelvic pain during my pregnancy. I was told I had pelvic girdle pain (PGP) or symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) which is apparently very common.
The good news was that it was treatable. My physiotherapist gently massaged my pubic area to help release my stiff pelvic joints whch helped relieve my pain . My physio also recommended i wear some medical grade compression pregnancy shorts [https://supacore.com/collections/pre-natal]
I also had to avoid carrying my toddler on my hip and climbing stairs !!
i'd recommend seeing your physio and trying the shorts.
