Anti-depressants and ivf

Post by emmalouise »

,6 months ago I came off my anti-depressants because I didn't want to be taking anything if I got pregnant. However, I have become very depressed again, and know I need to be taking something. I am not suicidle or anything, just feeling very down at the moment as my Gran has just died.

I was wondering if anyone else is taking any while they are going through IVF. We will be having our first try at IVF in a few months time and I am so worried to go to my Doctor incase he thinks I shouldn't be trying for a baby, or even worse that they might not give me IVF treatment. Could this happen? I would really appreciate some advice from someone

Thanks alot. Emma x

Hi Emmalouise

Sorry to hear about your Gran.....

Life just is not easy..........I understand your concerns with the antidepressants......

I sold an antidepressant for years and the company line is generally 'not recommended unless the benefit outweighs the risk' very non committal. Generally this is because there is no trial work on pregnant and lactating women.....for the simple reason of noone wanting to run the risk on their baby by volunteering.

There are various suggestions that they may be safe.........but that was a pharmaceutical company line (althought I left a while ago).......I do know that there are individual GPs and Consultants that will have used ADs on pregnant patients.........

Sorry for the very factual statement.......probably the best idea is to ask your clinic....they will definately have come across this before.

Good luck with the treatment!

Someone I know had been on them on and off at my clinic. She then attempted a donor egg situation and nothing and set her off again. She is a lot older too and problems with her and him - long story...... To cut a long story short she went back on anti-depressants and they were a bit reluctant to treat her - not so much from damaging the baby but becuase of her state of mind - could she really cope. She went MENTAL and kicked up a right fuss so they let her carry on at her own risk. She had 3 put back in and would you believe all 3 took - all donors. One perished pretty much straight away and then another - she now has a very healthy and strapping 18 month old boy - nothing wrong.

Not sure if this is any help. Good luck
