ohss ? what is this please

Hi everyone,

I know I keep asking what all these abb mean, I have guessed a lot of them but I am really struggling with this one.I read alot of the posts and keep seeing the abbreviation OHSS but have no clue what it stands for please help.

Hi Nicola

OHSS stands for ovarian hyperstmulation syndrome. Some degree of over-stimulation occurs in all woman being stimulated, because the drugs make the ovaries ripen as many eggs at one time, as occurs in more than a year of normal ovulation. If more than 30 follicles are stimulated, OHSS may occur.

If you look down the list of threads Nicola, you'll see 2 or 3 recent ones re OHSS or over stimuation - what the symtoms are and treatment is.

OHSS is quite rare to get though you are more at risk if you have PCOS
i ended up getting it with my first treatment i had 18 follicles and got 18 eggs at ec, i was a little bloated but was ok until i had ET a day or two after i got very bloated and my belly really hurt and i was a little dehydrated, i went to have a scan and my ovaries were large and had alot of retained fluid so had to stay in hospital for a week though i only had a mild case it was still horrible it can be very bad if it turns into a severe case on my second treatment i over stimmed again which the clinic did try to control and i got 18 follicles again and at ec i got 19 eggs and felt fine i think the normal amount of eggs they like you to get is about 10, i got alot of good advise on this board to start drinking loads of water around ec time and through the 2ww, the day after et i got really bloated again and just kept drinking loads of water and went for a scan and blood tests and had signs of it again but i managed to stay out of hospital by drinking loads of water if i had not it could have been bad as i did get pregnant but did not no this at the time of having the signs of ohss as it can turn to a severe case of ohss when you get pregnant but i just kept drinking and it went away by the time the 2ww was over i was lucky though not lucky enough to stay pregnant and had a M/C but not because of the ohss.

its always good to drinks lots of water, milk through the treatment

do you no when you will be starting your treatment?

Hi Susan,

I am not sure exactly when I will be starting my treatment, I have got to have all the nessasary blood tests first and sign all the nessasary paper work.I am just trying to get an idea what to expect in advance, I have got my first appointment on 20th Aug its with the IVF councillor, then the next appointment is two week later with the nurse to sort out all the paperwork and find out whats involved,but thanks to all you lovely people I will know most of what to expect already.It will probably be a month or two before I actually start any meds. but at least I will be prepared and ready for it.

I am a lot more at ease with the whole idea now THANKS AGAIN.
