Post by chellejayne »

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had been on metformin, (i'm taking it for polycystic ovaries syndrome,) if so what side effects or benefits have you found from taking it, i've only just started taking it, and i'm wondering whether it will help me loes weight or any other beneficial effects etc, just curious to see how its worked for everyone else, thanks for reading.

Hi Michelle,

I too have PCOS and have been taking metformin.

It takes a bit of getting used to. In the first couple of weeks it made me feel a bit queasy. I've been taking it for about 3 months and I don't have any side effects now, other than flatulence (one of the side effects that they conveniently forget to tell you about! ). If you do get side effects I've read that it helps to take the Metformin at meal times.

My main symptom of PCOS is being a bit on the hairy side. I think that the Metformin has helped with this but I could be imagining it.

With regards to weight loss, I haven't noticed any difference but then again I am on the light side anyway, so wouldn't really expect it to have any effect with me. I have heard that it can help with this though.

Hi Michelle,
I've just started taking metformin too.
I started taking them about three weeks ago and to be honest I've had no side effects at all - strange for me!
I take it for PCOS, the main this with me is lack of periods, due to the condition.
The funny thing was, within a couple of weeks of taking metformin, by period started, the first one I've had since february!
It might have been a coincidence, but who knows...
I hope you don't suffer any side effects Michelle, but I've been told that they are nothing too dramatic if you do. good luck and I hope it works for you.
claire x :)
