Progesterone - length of dosage?

Post by longbaygirl »

Hi Girls,

Hoping you can help me with this.............

I started taking progesterone on the day of ET. I've been told to take it for 10 days. I'm worried that coming off progesterone suddenly might cause a miscarriage if I am pregnant?

How long have others been told to take it for?

Joy:

I started taking progesterone injections the day of ET, and continued them until I was about 7 weeks pregnant...when they heard the heartbeat, they put me on a suppository progesterone and I took that until 12 weeks.

Good luck!

Hi Joy

I had to use Crinone Vaginal Progesterone gel for 14 days after ET, then when I tested +ve, I was told to take it for another 14 days. I did this, but still m/c'd, so it didn't make any difference to me. Sorry, hope I'm not sounding too negative! When I m/c'd the nurse at the hospital said that it is rarely anything we do or don't do that causes m/c's, but that there's something going on with the embie/embie's that just wasn't meant to be. Sorry again... this is sounding really depressive, when I'm trying to be encouraging  ! If your Dr doesn't think you need more progesterone then don't panic. He'll know what he's doing and won't be telling you anything that could jeopardise your precious embie/embies! These Dr's all have different opinions, and there's obviously no tried and tested proof of which way is best (if only), else we'd all be doing the same after treatement! God, I'm reading this, and it sounds really horrible, but it's not meant to be, so please don't take it the wrong way :? . Good luck with everything.

Take care

Love Jools xx

Jools is right...every Dr. follows a different protocol. My regular ob said that your placenta doesn't start producing it's own progesterone until about the 9th week. That's why mine wants you on them for 12 weeks until you have some overlap.

I know there was another cycler, I think she cycled in Italy that only had a very short round of progesteron as well.

Paige and Jools - thanks very much for the info. Its so nice to know you are there.

I think I just need to wait to find out if I am pregnant - 4 more days (please let all this nausea be a good sign rather than effects from that rotten progesterone). If I'm not it won't matter when I stop taking it and if i am I will check with my doctor about what to do next, and ask why.............

Jools - no you don't sound negative. You are completly right - I just wish treatment was a bit more standardised.

Thanks again girls

Jools!

It was you I was thinking of! Sorry for being horrible with names/protocols/locations...putting everyone together would require a gant chart!

Joy,
I'm taking Cyclogest (Projesterone suppositries/pessaries) x 2 day. I started them on day of et, and have to continue taking them until week 12 of pregnancy. Every clinic is different though, so I would just ask your consultant why they choose their protocol, and see whether you get a satisfactory answer.
I'm always questionning my consultant ... he physically sighs every time he sees me and says "what now"?!!!. What I have found out though is that every clinics tretament protocols are a secret from each other. I ask my consultant why the ARGC take everyone to day 5 and he said he doesn't know and that their treatments are a secret, that no-one shares things. It hits home then that this is a business and a lot of experimenting goes on.
Last time I was told to only take 1 progesterone, and this cycle been told to take 2. They therefore change things all the time.
Anyway, i'm rambling.
Hope you find a satisfactory answer.
