I was very sad to get a call from the clinic this morning. My AFP blood test came up with one in 62 risk of Downs Syndrome. Very disappointing after such a strong nuchal translucency result.

It looks like we'll have to do the amino now, even though the miscarriage risk is even higher for twins. I haven't even had time to talk with DH about it, since we were both rushing off to work when the call came. I realize that amnio is perfectly safe for most of us and that a false positive AFP is also very common. Still, it is very scary after what we've been through.

I have the amino appointment set for Nov.30, but they assured us that we can back out at the last minute if we change our minds.

This is the last thing that you need at the minute but least they have contacted you to tell you. Are you and DH going to talk about it? What are you going to do?

No matter what decision you make I hope all is ok for you and DH and I will keep my fingers crossed.

Hi Alicia. I'm sure you saw the thread from Cate (?) quite recently about her amnio. There were lots of posts from those of us who had gone through it safely.

Yes it is a worrying time but for me at least, it was the very long wait for the results (10 days) that I couldn't bear.

Hi Alicia,

Just catching up on the posts as I have not been on much lately. I am a bit confused as I was told because I was having twins that there is no test for downs. Not sure if it is different in the UK. My midwife is coming in a couple of hours, I'll ask her.

Either way, good luck with the decision making and I'll have my fingers crossed that everything will work out fine.

But, strange maybe, I have never heard from Twins with Down Syndrom...

Try not to worry too much, as tons of AFP tests have false positives for women over the age of 35 (I think that is when we all fell off of a cliff or something!).

My amnio was more of an emotional rollercoaster after the procedure than during. I even went to the hospital to make sure I wasn't leaking fluid....they can sample the discharge and look at it under a microscope. It really eased my mind, because you can have so many hormonal surges that cause different types of fluid (OK is this TMI?) that can make you worry which are all nothing.
Just make sure that you go to a maternal fetal genetic office where they do amnios all day long and it makes the risks go WAY down. The procedure is not painful at all! Though there is a weird pop when the needle goes through the uterus, not painful...just wierd.
My neighbor had irregular AFPs with both of her pregnancies, she had 3 amnios! The first with her perfect baby girl and the second/third with her perfect twin boys.

I have not been on the board for a while (twins keeping me busy), but as I wrote to Cate some time ago I had amnion after a lot of agonizing what to do and even lost some fluid from the sac of one of the twins, Alex, who later got born particularly strong and robust. It is quite a hard decision to make and go through, but most of the time it ends well, so I will keep my fingers crossed for you whate evr you decide.

i cant offer you any advice or anything as i decided right from the start i would have no tests or anything no matter what.

Thank you all for your experience and encouragement. We will have a consultation before the amnio and then about an hour to think about it. They said we could change our minds at the last minute if we wanted. So, still not sure we will go through with it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank you all for your well wishes. Ironically we went in today and they said the twins were in a position that made it not the best day to do it. So they're having us come back in two weeks to see if it will be any better. Strange.

Well after all that we've been through, we've cerainly learned how to wait, haven't we

We'll give it another go on Dec. 15.
