Eek - MMR time!!!

Eek - Jay's 1 on 27th Jan and I've had his appointment for the MMR through at the health centre.

I had successfully shelved thinking about this for ages, but am now confronted with such a mega dilemma.

My problem is that I have no faith whatsoever in the government/dept of Health. I remember reading about the dangers of thiomersal (mercury preservative in DTP triple jabs) when Jay was born and raising doubts in the health centre. I was totally fobbed off by my HV proclaiming it completely safe, adn pouring scorn on the fac that I knew it had been banned in USA and Japan. So Jay had the jabs. Then, a few months later the jabs are banned by the Dept of Health - yes because of the mercury - adn a new mercury free 5 in 1 is brought out.

I know that immunisation is necessary, but to protect our babies. But if there is a problem with MMR, should I not protect my baby by not giving it?

I really don't know what to do for the best and would really welcome everyone's views please.

Sally, have a look at the 'only me' thread. There's lots about MMR on there and most of us with kids who have passed the 1yr mark discuss what we did and how we felt.

The subject of MMR is starting to occupy my mind too as Alice will be one at the end of March. I read on the site somewhere that to have the jabs separately costs around £80 per time??? I dont know if they are hard to obtain but think I might have a word with the health visitor. I remember the mercury thing being on the news the day after Alice had her injection - makes you feel terrible.

I dont trust the govt either - they are just guessing with most of it and the HV's support them and "tow the party line" so to speak - we are all in the dark I reckon!

Still dont know what to do about this.

It is costing us around £70 -£80 per jab and they have assured us that the vacines will be in stock. We contacted a private hospital local to us who have a private GP sevice.

Its a 3 month gap between the jabs which is the only downside, but you have do what you feel is the right choice, I still think that they would have been fine with the MMR but DH was paranoid about it and really put his foot down.

I have done some investigating on the internet - all the government and healthcare systems say have it done, but at the back of my mind is the knowledge that thousands of parents BELIEVE that MMR damaged their child. In addition the Gov completely denied Gulf War Syndrome for years in the face of people who were suffereing as a result of it - there is now a theory that it was due to the soldiers being vaccinated 12 times or more. I have been through so much to have Jay adn I love him so much I simply could not bear it if anything happened to him.

So I have decided that because for now I am undecided ( ) that I'm not going to do anything until I am 100% certain about the best course of action.

It is such a dilemma and not sure what to do for the best I have been checking the mmr website which does have some interesting things but no matter what you read it still comes down to making them decisions in life and them being the right ones.
