How long should I wait before trying again?

Post by Nel »

This question has probably been asked a million times before but I'm still new to this site and am not up to date with all the latest goss. Couldn't face trawling through the old message board and thought I'd like to get to know all you guys anyway. I've had one failed IVF attempt back in August, and then a failed attempt at "frosties" (just found out this morning). As I'm completely desperate to get on with all this and get my life back, I'd like to have another go at IVF as soon as I can, but wondered if it's better to wait. My consultant will probably tell me there's no advantage in waiting, but I've heard reports that it's better to skip a cycle before trying again. Having done it with frozen, however, and didn't need any drugs as it was done on a natural cycle, does this mean my body is more likely to have flushed out all the drugs I took the first time?
Would love to hear some thoughts on this
Nel x

Hi Nel

In the Northeast where I live I have heard that the hospital prefer you to wait 3 months to clear your system of all the drugs etc from you body before they will start another round of treatment.
It may be a shorter period of time where you live as I presonally think 3 months is like a life time when you want to get preg.
By the sounds of it your body should be rid of any drugs so no need to wait.
GO FOR IT GIRL AND "GOOD LUCK" THIS TIME.

LOVE DEBSx

Nel - so sorry for your disappointment.

My feeling is there's two aspects to the "how soon" question - the physical one and the emotional one. As Debs says, I think 3 months is probably the standard recommended wait between cycles to get the drugs out of your system, so from that point of view you'd probably be fine to go again as soon as poss. But you and your partner also need to think about the emotional side and be ready for whatever that brings. I've had two failed attempts so far and each time my initial reaction was to go again as soon as poss, but I've ended up taking 4-5 months between goes, and I feel that for me that time between cycles (particularly over the summer) has been really important to get some balance back and enjoy life a little again.

That's just my experience and I know everyone's different. Good luck whatever you decide and do take care of yourself over the next few days and weeks.

Alison

Hi Debs and Alison
thanks for your replies. There's so much conflicting information out there from different medical faculties world wide, that it does get rather confussing. Am not seeing my consultant for another week, which gives me plenty of time to make my mind up.
Take care and keep in touch
Nel x

Nel,

Did you say you found out this morning that the FET didn't work? I'm so sorry if this is the case, I remember how positive I was after having FET and was probably more shocked that it didn't work than the IVF.

I had 1 failed IVF and I failed FET took 3 months out had another attempt at IVF and fell pregnant. Three months was along time, but I kept myself busy with a holiday and then it was Christmas and before I knew it I was sniffing again.

Hope this some kind of help
Love
Charmaine
x
