When to stop sterlising bottles?

Post by bubblymichelle »

HI Girls

Does anyone know when it is safe to stop sterilising bottles? I am still doing Alex's bottles but wasn't sure if it is ok to stop now, any ideas?

Sorry can't help, I always used the dishwasher right up until we stopped. The temperatures in there are so hot, I didn't ever use formal sterilising equipment.

Thanks for the post though Deb I am sure someone should be able to help me. I wish I had a dishwasher but my dishwasher is attached to the end of my arms.

Shell, I meant to say we used the dishwasher until we stopped with bottles. I've just checked Miriam Stoppard's book and she suggests it's OK to stop sterilising when the baby is 6m old.

Hi Shell!

The advice that we were given was to stop sterilising at 12 months old so you should be fine to stop now.

So if I was to stop now do I just wash them in soapy water?

Yes, hot soapy water with a good rinse afterwards.

12 months I think Shell. My sister stopped then and her wee one was on cows milk by then so a good wash is all she does.

I think bacteria breeds after an hour or so, so just don't leave the milk in for ages and you'll be fine. Check with your HV if you are unsure though.

Hi Shell ....... I read 6 months. I have one of those microwave steam sterilisers so it only takes 5 mintues. I usually just use hot soapy water and bottle brush but every other time sterilise bottles and dummies etc - thought it can't do any harm. i'm sure just washing is OK.

There's always something to worry about isnt there?!! When one thing finishes there's something else!!!

Hi Jo
Your right I am still sterlising so its not bad it only takes 8 minutes so why just wash them atm it seems to be ok so I will do it for a little while longer.
