Sorry Becky I couldn't resist!

Magpies are big black and white birds which according to myth, steal sparkly things like jewellery and things that shine. They are considered an omen if you see them.

The rhyme goes like this...

1 for sorrow
2 for joy
3 for a girl
4 for a boy

Actually I can't remember the rest. Anyone else remember??

If you see 1 you salute it like a soldier and say"Good morning Captain"!! See, us Brits have some strange behaviour!!

They are black and white like your bisuits but I bet they don't taste quite so nice.

This post has got sooo funny - see what you have started Julie??! :D

Yes Dagny the rhyme goes:

1 for sorrow
2 for joy
3 for a girl
4 for a boy
5 for silver
6 for gold
7 for a secret...
...never to be told!!

so what do you do if you are having twins and it is one of each - would you see 3 or 4?

i hate seeing one like i said - i must be very superstitious - and i make it my business to find a second or more!!! So if you see me climbing up trees and looking under bushes.....................

the other thing about magpies (apart from the fact that they steal anything that sparkles(hold onto your jewellery!!! )) is that they (alledgedly) never build nests, they look for a nest that already has eggs in it, then nudge one or two out and lay their own eggs there!!! they are not very nice creatures..........

I think i would prefer Beckys magpies (yum yum) - My goodness you would look funny soluting the biscuits in a store Becky - they would have you carted off to a white padded room!!! hee hee

so help us out then Becky - what silly rhymes and customs do you have across the pond?!

I have learned growing up that if you see a penny on the ground and it is heads up you should pick it up and it will bring you good luck.
Also, it is said that while you drive over railroad tracks to lift your feet and make a wish for good luck.
Finally, good luck charms are used by many people. Things such as rabbit's feet, horseshoes, four-leaf clovers, and other things to peoples interests will bring them good luck
I am not sure if this is true but when you enter a car you are suppose to enter it with your right leg for good Luck

that when you ate a piece of pie, or anything pointy, you had to cut off the point and push it to the side. After you had eaten the entire pie piece, you put the point in your mouth and made a wish

evryone start eating the point last !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JJj and Becky - are they called Jay-birds over in the States?

yes we have the penny one too - 'Find a penny, pick it up, all day long, you'll have good luck!' and the various other ones. nover heard about peeling boiled eggs jackets tho - wouldnt they get cold?? :D

one thing about entering a car with the right leg first - what if you enter it from the right of the car - your left leg is nearest then! (Drivers side here, Passenger side in the States) it would look a bit wierd trying to enter that side with the right leg!! ha ha
