Sorry to start another thread, but I wasn't sure where best to post this. I just wondered whether you could get your doctor/clinic to do a blood test for the hormone, rather than just test it in your urine? The first one doesn't mean much on its own, but then you can test again in 2 or 3 days and see whether its going up or down - if its going up as I understand it you can be pretty sure you haven't miscarried (although obviously if you're still bleeding it won't put your mind completely at rest). If all's OK the levels are supposed to double every few days in early pregnancy, I think.

Don't know if this helps at all. I'm not sure that I can wait 3 weeks to find out what's going on with you both, so god only knows how you are coping! Seriously though, I am thinking of you and hoping that this story turns into 2 (at least!) little miracles.

Much love

Alison x

Hi Alison,

I learnt qute a bit from my trip to the clinic yesterday, I am truely so lucky that they really do seem to care.

They did a simple pg bloodtest on me - the only possible results here are -ve, +ve or 'weakly +ve'. They confirmed me as +ve. It is only slightly more accurate than the urine test and can measure any hCG levels above 20-ish.

A beta test (which I've heard about and never before understood) is where they actually measure the levels of hCG, and like you say this should rise for tests taken approximately 48 hours apart.

I've got to ring on Wednesday, when they will discuss what we will do next - they mentioned both scans and beta tests may be a possibility, although in the scans they are more looking for 'trouble' than confirmation of pg.

Apparently, a +ve hCG test result is known as a 'Biochemical' pg - so all 4 of us are at this stage, and pg is confirmed by visibility of the sac in the uterus at the 3 week scan. If no sac is detected, then it is referred to as a 'Biochemical' pg, although they explained some do refer to miscarriage this early.

Being informed does help, but I am with woppa, in that I just want to know what is going on. Having said this, I'm leaning slightly more on the side of positivity than yesterday and feel I have such wonderful friends here by my side. Thanks again Alison and Debs for such kind words.

Woppa - hope you can post as soon as you can and all goes well this morning.

Love Fiona xxx

Hi,

Just having a quick look, break form work. Saw your doubt about the Beta Hcg Test . This test is more accurate as the Beta HcG levels double every 24 or 48 hours and these levels only increase when you are pregnant ! I had this test at the begininng of the year when no AF appeared , some spotting and it turned out I was pregnant but with ectopic pregnancy !
Hope this helps a bit.

Good luck !

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your message - I was beginning to worry about you not being in touch in case you were upset over becoming an aunt. Has this happened yet? We're here for you if you want to rant and rave or feel in need of a hug.

Had a bit of a jolt this morning as woke up bleeding again. The clinic still can't do much (but are fully willing to give any moral support I want), and dh was crying his eyes out (and apologising for it, poor thing). But it seems to have been a 'flash' bleed leaving me with some spotting, and I'm just praying it will disappear totally soon. Otherwise, I still feel a bit numb with all that is happening.

The clinic has arranged for a scan on monday to check me out - they say its too early to do the beta tests. The pg scan will be on 11 Nov providing things go OK.

Take Care Julie and everyone else out there.

Lots of Love

Fiona xxxx
