Post by leigh »

Hi All
Starting cycle of iui from today!! Just wandered how many of you had your babies after iui treatment. How many attempts did it take? What were your problems with conceiving in the first place?
Thanks xxxxxxx

Dear Leigh,

Sorry I can't really help, because I had to start off with IVF and ICSI due to endometriosis and low sperm count (DH not me). Ours worked on the second attempt.

I don't have any direct experience of IUI, but I have a friend who had unexplained infertility for about 5 years, and had about 3 goes of iui before having IVF - she had fraternal twin boys on her second IVF attempt.

I think IUI is a first step, with IVF perceived as a last resort, so a lot of things are important factors, such as your age, DH's sperm quality and whether you have any problems such as endometriosis, fibroids etc.

Has your consultant said how many goes of IUI to try?

Sorry I cant be of much help.
love Sally xxx

Thanks Sally
Our prob is that I only ovulate sometimes. DH sperm quality good in all areas except sometimes antibodies quite high. Doc recommended one iui then on to ivf if not successful. Me and DH both 32.
Fingers crossed xxx

Hi Leigh,

We were successful with IUI on our 2nd attempt and I'm currently 33 wks pregnant.

I'm 32 and have polycystic ovaries. Because of this they suspected that I ovulate fairly infrequently and when I do the quality of the egg probably isn't that good.

My husband is 31 and his semen analysis always showed a low percentage of normally formed sperm. However, the count was good and the sperm that were normal were good swimmers.

Our original gut instinct was to start with IUI and move on to IVF if the IUI didn't work. However, because of our problems we were advised to start with with IVF, as this would show if there were any additional problems e.g. with fertilisation of the eggs.

Anyway the IVF was successful in that we got pregnant but unfortunately it was ectopic. This was all a bit traumatic and, with hindsight, we wish we had started with the IUI first.

After that we decided to go back to our original plan of IUI. I received FSH injections to help me ovulate and we are glad to say that it worked second time.

As I'm sure you are aware the success rates with IUI are lower than with IVF so I'm surprised that you've only been advised to try one cycle. We said that we would give it at least 3 tries before going back to IVF and our consultant said we should plan for more IUI tries than that.

With the first IUI, there's a lot of trial and error and it might take a few tries to get the drug dosage right. For my first IUI, I was on the minimum dose of FSH injections but it wasn't enough which is probably why it didn't work. With the second IUI, they upped the dosage slightly which did the trick.

What drugs are you on? Are you having injections?
I wish you the best of luck with the IUI and I'll be following your progress.

Thanks Barny and it is nice to know someone is watching out for me. Not long to go for you now eh?! I have a friend who is due 10th June, i felt her baby kicking, it was lovely. Is this your first child? Do you know if it's a boy or girl?
I'm on clomid at moment then start injections of menopur on Tuesday. Thanks for your advice and if it doesn't work this time will ask doc what he thinks about us trying again with iui. I suppose this cycle will help us to see what works for us.

Will be watching to see when you have baby, good luck

Hi Lisa,

Yep, my due date is getting scarringly close now. Still can't believe I'm actually pregnant some days. Feel so lucky. It will be our first child and we have decided not to find out whether it's a boy or a girl. Can't wait to find out now though.

Good luck with the IUI and the injections. I think I was on Clomid for days 2 to 6 and Puregon injections every other day until the insemination.

Hi Lisa

How did you get on with the IUI? I have only just found your thread as I haven't had a great deal of time since my third arrived 5 months ago.

I hope it was successful. My eldest, Jake, was conceived on my second attempt with IUI and he has just turned 11!!!!!
I had to resort to IVF to have the other two but IUI is a lot less stressful and invasisive.

Good luck

Hi Fiona
Iui failed this time. :( We've decided to go for ivf in October. We feel that it has better odds of success. Thank you for looking out for me and it's nice to hear success stories. Congratulations on your 3 little success stories!
