Why is everything in IVF about waiting :x

What are "killer cells"?

Post by hopefullyexpecting »

I thought of myself as pretty knowledgeable about IVF, but what are these killer cells that you all are talking about on this thread? :? They gave me a steroid to suppress my immune system, but are you saying that my body may be killing the embryos like it's a virus or something? I'm on day 9 of my 2ww, so I might be freaking out a little. Thanks, Liz

Hi Liz

If you do a search on this site, there's been quite a few discussions about NK (natural killer) cells over the months.

NK cells are part of your immune system, and over zealous ones perceive the embryo as foreign, and prevent it from implanting.

I don't know what the tmt is for these NK cells. Maybe the steroid you're already taking is as a precaution against NK cells ?

Liz

Sandra's right the steroid is used to help combat the NK cells.

I've just had a blood test done which goes to Chicago to determine my own levels. This test is really expensive, but hopefully will give my consultant a clearer indication into my "unexplained" problems.

There are several other drugs that are used and I think these are based on your actual levels.

Please don't panic - you are so near the end of your 2ww you don't need to be thinking of anything else.

Take care of yourself

Hi all

Just wanted to say that I got my results today:

I have a high level of Natural Killer Cells :x  :?

Now, apparently, the fun begins - I am going to have steroids, a hysteroscopy and something called IVIg infusions (apparently 3.5 hours on a drip  :!: )

Anyway, I would love to hear from anyone with experience, knowledge or understanding of these little terrors because I haven't really got a clue
