Caroline!
So good to hear from you! What is your update? What are all the scans about? Are you feeling okay? Sorry for all the questions, but you are among the heroes of our group and someone like me (on this side of the pregnant-at-40 fence) hangs on your every word. Do tell all you can.

It really is so nice to be able to talk to you ladies, especially as we are all either the same age or similar. It is truly wonderful as, maybe some of you would have experienced, you don't come across many ladies our age on a daily basis that you can have a general chit chat to about IVF so this board is fantastic.

Caroline, your perseverance is amazing and I am thrilled that you have a result. I hope you don't mind me asking but at what stage did they put back your embryos (how many cells per embryo) and how many? would love to hear.

Randa,

Have you had any fresh embryo transfers or are you going for fet? Good luck to you for June x

I am doing really well if a little more tired than usual - but gratefully no sign or any sickness yet!

I had a second scan today as they were signs last week of a second baby sac but no heartbeat. Today they confirmed a one baby pregnancy with healthy growth rate (doubled in size from 3mm to 6.4mm in a week) and excellent heartbeat. I am 'normal' for a 7 week pregnancy.

I was discharged from the IVF unit today and have been to see the GP who has booked me an initial meeting with the midwife on 9th May. The midwife will organise my 12 week scan (OMG in 5 weeks)! The 12 week scan will, amongst other things, determine my risk factor for downs sydrome and whether I will elect (or not) to have an amnio test.

It all seems like it is happening to someone else and then DH breaks down into an emotional mess and I have to mop up the tears! I am very calm about the whole thing and I suspect that the 2ww is the start of the worrying process of being a parent!

Thank you for your interest and I will keep you all informed with the updates from a mature pregnant lady.

Caroline, I'm chasing you around the boards but now realise what the extra scan was all about.

Meandmine (will you reveal your name I wonder?). Like you I also had 3 put back, 2 x 4 cell and 1 x 2 cell. We asked for 3 as the latter was unlikely to survive freezing and v. doubtful for defrosting. We've 3 x 4 cells in the freezer. Fingers crossed we won't need them. Sadly we can't donate them or do anything more than have them destroyed - that's the law here Norway.

Yes this over 40 board is fabulous, thank Randa as it was her idea and has really worked well. There was a surge of us at the same time and like you say, it really helps to chat to people who geniunely understand.

Thanks, Caroline!
That was juicy! Full of good info.
I cheered out loud as I read your words about a healthy heartbeat and growth rate for a single baby!!! :D Can you believe this???? Wow!

Meandmine,
I have yet to go through any transfer. We chose to do a freeze-all the first round, because we wanted to "bank" a few embryos to increase chances for siblings (that way we are always working with 43-year-old eggs going forward). I know that sounds terribly greedy, but it's a man-thing. And since I already have children from a previous marriage and this is my hubby's only shot at children, I'm letting him run the show. Risky. We had one high-quality 8 cell embryo and 4 others of varying degrees beneath that. We'll never know what would have happened if we had done a fresh transfer. Like I said, risky.
So, we'll do one more EC in June and transfer fresh (provided we are fortunate enough to get any). If not, we'll use the frozens (provided they make it through the thawing process). Like you, we'll do 3 at a time.

Sandra,

Hi and thank you for your message. So did you have your fet in April? FET seems as popular as fresh - I am amazed how many people are having this procedure. We have had two frozen - I was surprised we got to this stage as last time (7 years ago, believe it or not) my embryos were of a poorer quality and could not be frozen (lots of fragmentation over the following 24 hour period). This time the whole cycle treatment has yielded a better crop!! This is our last attempt (me 43, dh 41) and we are resigned to that (although there are the two frosties this time) so we'll see. This 2 ww is just awful. :? Take care.

hi sharon. i have popped from may thread to here for a catch up!! sounds like such a wonderful result you've had re egg quality and i'm sure the prep you've done is responsible for that. are you following the advice of the ZW book or have you had consultations and acupuncture at her clinic??

Hi Minnow,

I was searching the net trying to find some information on acupuncture as I had heard that studies abroad had yielded some pretty impressive results and as I was doing this, of course, Zita West's name popped up also. So I got the book and found a lady in the yellow pages (Physio and Acupuncturist) who's specialty was infertility and and period-related conditions. She doesn't live too close though - the round trip is around 50 miles! I have had weekly treatments for just over two months now. We just felt we would try anything this time and as well as hoping it will be of benefit in the treatment cycle, I have enjoyed it too and made a really nice friend in her.

hi. acupuncture is great isnt it? i have had it for a year now on a fortnightly basis. i then went to weekly in the lead up to ivf and from today am going to do the same again. i feel the same as you that it's worth trying and Tom has been a god support too throughout the process.

I had a treatment the day before ET as, I have a retroverted uterus and during my last ET some years ago transfer was not straightforward because of the positioning of my womb. This time I concentrated on my 8 count deep breathing exercises (Zita's Tips!!) and the procedure lasted all of 30 seconds. So that in itself was a relief and I think the acupuncture has helped me to learn to relax more and go with the flow, so to speak.

Oh .. That's nice - thanks Randa ! Yeah .. scan tomorrow, and hoping they'll give me a date for ET. I've not done an FET before, so not too sure how it all works out. Your plan (freezing, then going for another EC) sounds like a great idea to me. Hope you're managing to stay sane, and spending your time wisely. June's only just around the corner now !!

Sharon ... Well, it certainly sounds like you've been doing something right ... it doesn't often work this way around ! I hope you're not going too mental during your 2ww ?? A week on Friday and all will be revealed. I hope you can keep yourself occupied to while away the time.

Remember, if you have no symptom - this can be a positive result ! However, if you do have symptoms - this too can be positive !
You can't win really, so don't fret too much over every twinge. Good luck !
