New and have questions

Post by katylark »

Hi! Just received the news yesterday on our BFP!!! I am very thankful to be able to post on this side, too. I have heard different things about breast preparation for breast feeding. Also, any good ideas for preventing stretch marks? Your help is much needed and appreciated.

Thanks!

HI Katy,
First of all, a huge CONGRATULATIONS!!!! for your positive result, how exciting!.I am mum to the delightful Annie who is now 6 months old, I still so cearly remember the day we got the good news, we were on cloud nine for days (weeks / months!!)

In terms of streth marks, I bought a roll on body cream from the Body Shop. I am in Australia but know that the Body Shop started in the UK, so you should have no probs. Can't remember the exact name but know that it was a cocoa butter body stick type of thing, on the tube it says that it is designed to prevent stretch marks for pregnant women.Worked a treat for me, nine pound baby at 39 weeks and not a single mark!!

We are breastfeeding, and its all gone pretty well. In terms of preparing your nipples or breasts for feeding I think that this is now an outdated thought (this is what we were told at the antenatal classes anyway). Is there a breastfeeding association in the UK (In Australia we have the Australian Breastfeeding Association)??, our association runs preparation for breastfeeding classes where they talk through the ins and outs of feeding, what to expect etc. Costs about $70 here, so about $25 pounds or so I think..would be worth investigating.

Congrats again!
Belinda

Belinda,

Thanks so much for your help! I'm sure the memories are forever in your mind and a big congratulations to you on your precious little one! Actually, I live in the US, not the UK but I will check to see if I can find a similar product.

Have a great day,
Katy

Katy, I was told that the propensity to stretch marks is genetic, if your mum got them there's a good chance you might too. Having said that, I used all and any kinds of body lotion after my daily shower and didn't get any stretch marks at all, which seems pretty lucky and somewhat unusual. I was 39 and had put on 15kgs/33lbs when I had DD so my skin wasn't young and snappy anymore!

Re. breastfeeding. Is La Leche in the US? or something similar? If you want to get a real head start :) you could always contact your local breast feeding counsellor (Yellow Pages?) and see what advice they have. I've not heard of anything you can do beforehand. Although if people have flat or inverted nipples there are things to try to change the shape before the baby arrives.

Good luck and congratulations on your BFP!

Hi!

Thanks Debra! I appreciate the advice as this is soooo very new to me. I've always had a fear that I'd never experience pregnancy and would not allow myself to ever read anything about it. Now, as you can imagine, I've bought books and reading all the time! My mom has no stretch marks but she was 23 when I was born. I will be 39, like you, when this baby is born and figure my odds of stretch marks is rather high. My dr. has an early inclination (based on hCG numbers) that we may have twins. That is another reason I fear the stretch marks.

Hope all is going well with you!

Hi Katy,
Just another thought, no idea re. the la leache league (sorry, also no idea re. spelling obviously!), but have just come across from the Australian Breastfeeding Association web site. This is an excellent site, has a forum site, and threads specifically for women who are preparing to breastfeed (such as yourself) combined with women in the early days of feeding. I have noticed that there are lots of international women registered (it is free to join up and works quite similarly to this site), some from the states, from Europe, Japan and even Moscow. So might be worth a look!

Keen to hear your news re. multiples etc!!
