Hi Debra

I had my nuchal scan on Tuesday (at 11 weeks & 4 days) and everything with the baby looks good.

Had a long consultation with the Dr who will be monitoring my pregnancy (he was also my IVF consultant) and although quite happy with the nuchal results he has still left the decision to us whether or not to have the amino.

Apparantly the national statistics for a down syndrome baby at 43 are 1:20 but when they put in my scan results, my risk factor reduces to 1:109. Although this is nearly 5 times less likely than the national stats its still seems quite high to me.

DH is more towards not having the amnio (he thinks sticking a long needle into an unborn baby is barbaric - Men!) but I am still 50:50. We have at least 4 weeks until we have to book the appointment so I have some thinking and research time.

Other than than the baby is 5.5cm and bouncing all over the place - I could be in for a rocky ride. My due date varies from 8th to 18th December depending on who you talk to (some take it from start of AF, others from ET and finally from the measurements of the baby, thats 8th December).

I am feeling miles better, nausea has gone (I was never actually sick), AF pains disappeared and energy levels increasing. Still have sore boobs when taking off my bra at night but that might have something to do with the bras being a bit small for me now!

I have been monitoring the boards and keeping up with the news and thank you for remembering me.

(mine was 1:900 coming from 1:60 and I do not care anymore! the risk of a miscarriage now from an amnio is far far far bigger than having a child with down syndrom! I am enjoying my pregnancy now!
there are NO GARANTEES for a healty baby!)

Caroline, that's good news.

Not sure if your comment about DH and the amnio was tongue in cheek, but he knows the needle only goes into the fluid surrounding the baby doesn't he? and that it's done via ultrasound so they make sure to be careful?

I had a terrible struggle with my amnio with DD. Not the decision to have one, I was working at the time with a severely disabled child, but the wait for the result was the worst part of my pregnancy and I cried continually with the stress. I'd not wish that on anyone.

Thanks for your replies and DH's comments were definitely tongue in cheek.

I know that my ratios were very good and I am almost certain that I am going to enjoy the rest of the pregnancy and skip the amnio choice.

The thought of miscarrying a potentially perfectly heathly baby is more frightening than looking after a child with a potential disability.

Caroline - your results were excellent.

My nucal went well - very low risk so no need for any invasive tests.

Stopped my PIO, Uterogesan and Progynova a few days ago and feel even more tired and nauseas than before - there was me blaming it all on the drugs!

Sorry Caroline, I misread.

I thought your chances were 1; 1109!! instead of 1:109.

in this case.....
I myself would have chosen for an amnio.

for my hospital advises an amnio with a 1: 250 result.

i am so sorry for misready and therefor reacting not the way I should have wanted to react.

Caroline - 1 in 109 is much better than 1 in 20, so it is still a good result, relative for your age. I know anything under 1 in 250 is considered 'high-risk', but there is no point having invasive tests unless you would consider a termination. Why put yourself through all that extra stress?

With my daughter we were given a 1 in 10 ratio, and we decided that if she had major chromosomal abromalities or major disability we would not continue with the pregnancy. I opted for a CVS because this can be done much earlier than an amnio, and if we decided to terminate the proceedure would be a much easier one - a D&C vs going through labour/delivery.

Luckily for us the results came back to tell us she was perfect, although, of course, in the end we did not have a positive outcome, but this had nothing to do with the CVS.

Whatever you decide we are all here for you.

hello ladies it's me, and I can now officially join you

I never thought this would happen

Had a call from the gynae this morning and we have Beta HCG 43,6

Have called Barcelon and spoken to Victoria, she says it's a very good result for day 13, and unlikely to be a multiple. We did a pee stick last night as the results hadn't come back, so I bought 4 tests to get us through the weekend if necessary, but thank goodness it was a faint but firm +ve last night, confirmed by the blood test result so now I just have to start believeing it don't I???

Jude, I have my first scan on 7th June which is 27 days after fertilisation. I guess that's the point where it becomes real - what could you see at your scan??? I think you did yours a bit later??? Victoria and George are pleased I was so distraught after we only had 3 embies, so this is a wonderful outcome. Good old IM Barcelona, and good old George and his team eh??

So happy you are here, I have kept up with your news all along...thinking of you Alette, that's a tough one to make, but your chances are quite a lot better than the average aren't they??

Hi BigJ & welcome to the other side.

Looks like we both scan on the same day - We're having our 12 week scan that morning.

We scanned at just on 7 weeks so that we would be sure to see a heartbeat. It didn't really look like much just 2 small pulsating 'blobs' - I know, I know I should have seen them as my babies. I think you just get a sense of relief that you can see a heartbeat. Or maybe I'm just not very imaginative!

Good old George - a 100% success rate so far.

Again, I'm so very happy for you.

I had the same Jude.

there is such a big difference between a scan at 8 weeks and at 12 weeks.

at 8 weeks I thought it could have been an embryo of a kangaroo instead of my 'baby'.
at 12 weeks there is already a complete little child! with 5 fingers (I did not see them but the woman doing the scan was counting) and little feet....

of course I was as happy as a child with the 8 week scan for we saw a heartbeat and I never ever have seen that before!

Hi Big J - saw your news on the ff board. Congratulations again.

Agree with Allette. I had first scan at just over six weeks and all you can see is a sac (or two?) with a fetal pole (heartbeat?), At 8 weeks it is a fuzzy blob, with a heartbeat, but at 11+ it looks like a real person, just a tiny one.

Caroline - apology, I had read the thread so fast I confuesed your post with Alette. Hope you have made your decision now sweetie, it's a hard one. I know my sister (39) had a similar result to yours with her first baby and hesitated a long time, in the end they didn't do amnio and she has Thomas, lovely healthy boy. With nr 2 (she is now 35 weeks) they had a much better resulkt, more like Alettes, and I think then she realised how different the first one was. She said though, she would still have not had amnio. Sue that doesn't help atall but thought I'd say it anyway.

I just am having a very hard time believeing this is true. It's strange isn't it, after all this waiting and trauma, now I am pg everyone has "gone away". dh is working like mad as he took lots of time out last week to be with me in the 2ww.- Even mum and sis are like "call you next week then". Guess I am not exciting anymore

It's terrible as I feel I really need support now as I am so worried that when we have the scan there'll be nothing there

I guess I just need to deal with it, the whole pg will be like this, lots of hurdles, so it's back to one step at a time.

oh and I have got quite plump with the hormones,nothing fits anymore

I now have 2 jeans and 2 jogging trousers and 1 old linen baggy summer trouser (that's tight), and that's it. Oh yes and the skirt I bought for Barcelona

that'll fit for a bit but it's more "posh" so no good for Thuerk!! (that's the one-eyed village where we live). All may tops make me look like an East enders bar tart

My 2 new bras are too tight already but I don't want to buy a maternity bra yet I don't want to tempt fate

what to do??any advice?
