post tranfer anxiety

Post by quasi »

Hello! I'm 29 years old and my dh and i have been ttc for 3+ years. After lots of meds and 4 iui's, we were told to try ivf.
anyway, I did my embryo transfer two days ago (so today is 5 days after egg retrieval) and i worry that everything i do will affect the implanting. This even includes going to the bathroom. can anyone tell me what are the 'real' dos and don'ts post transfer?
My doctor has given me the week off work and has recommended minimal activity but this has only made the wait drawn out and i've started stressing about the what if's, which is really bringing me down.
Anybody else in my boat? i would love to hear from you.

Hi Quasi

Well done - you have completed the hard part! I know it is really nerve wracking on the 2ww but just hang in there.

You may want to look at a thread further down called Do's and Don'ts. I am sure lots of replies will come soon form others on 2ww - I am not quite there.

Have you joined the June 05 test dates thread or June/July roll call? They are full of girls (and partners!) doing treatment at the moment and you will get loads of support there.

Everything you are feeling is completely normal. I went back to work afetr a couple of days and was careful not to lift, and took it a bit easier. Bit like as though you are definitely pregnant.

Take care and good luck :D

hi lumi, tks for your reply.
what stage are you at?
The more posts i read, the more comforting yet nerve racking it is. you said the hard part is over... for me, that was the easy part. I was "happy" to do everything leading to the ivf... i am just so scared to receive a negative result. After being so hopeful, i don't know how I will handle it.
I know I'm meant to be positive and keep the faith... i'm really trying. I'm just so scared. At this point, i can't think of anything else.

i hope things are going well for you.

I know how you are feeling, and it is so easy for me to say to you to try and relax.

You might find it helpful chatting to others on the 2ww - there is a May 05 2ww thread and one just started for June 05 2ww where girls currently in your situation are talking daily to help support each other.

If you let me know your test date I will add you to the list.

Take care and do read the Do's and Don'ts thread - you never know it might reassure you.

Big hugs

Little P

Hi Girls

This will probably be of no help to you but anyway!!

I got pregnant on my 6th treatment...........for all the others I did various things.......reflexology, acupuncture, councilling, no gym.........you name it I tried it!

On my 6th one, I was so bored and dispondant, quite honestly I could not have been bothered, so I went to the gym right up to EC (not after ET), did not drink tea/coffee.........did have 1/2 glass of red wine once a week.......still do! and generally went about life as normally as possible.....

The bottom line is.......if the wee buggers are going to stick around, nothing will stop them........this is an unfortunate game based around a bit of science and a lot of luck as far as I am concerned!

So do what you feel comfortable with and whatever gets you through that 2ww as quick as possible.......

Massive good lucks

Hi Quasi, welcome to the board   you will get the most detailed and helpful support form htis board, so glad you found us. As the other girls have said the threads to join are the 2ww and the June/July buddies, those are the ladies going through the same as you right now.

On my 2ww I went completely potty after 1 day of rest, we were in Barcelona, so we did some gentle walking and lying in the park, ate loads of healthy fish and mediterranean garlicy food yum yum. I pottered about a lot on the 2ww, walked the dogs each day (dh took them on the lead, but I kept up the pace). I just avoided anything heavy, but prioritised eating well, loads of water, loads of fruit, veg, salad and regular rests. We all swear by Zita West (you can find her books on Amazon) she has one about fertility which covers the 2ww, and one called natural pregnancy which has remedies for all sorts of ailments when you can't take drugs as well as lots of health advice generally.

I know it's hard, but the best is to assume you are pg until you find out otherwise, that way you'll do it all right    I think being happy and positive must help

Love and kisses and best of luck to you

I am preparing for my second ET. As a I had OHSS from ICSi last year, I havent done a fresh transfer.

I found it helpful to have a plan for a -ve result, although the meds send you a bit crazy and all rational thoughts pre-transfer are difficult to recall! But dont be scared of a -ve, you really can come through it and feel stronger for another go. I am so excited about this FET!

However, in the meantime keep up the PMA :D :D :D and deal with each day as it comes. In my head I feel that God will decide when I will be pregnant, so even a -ve result is one step closer to my +ve result - if you see what I mean!?!

Take care, Love Lumi XX

Quasi,
Hi and welcome! Not to make light of what we are going through, but you made me laugh with post transfer anxiety. I think that pta should be a legimitate mental condition, and that you are probably right to take the week off. I had my transfer last Wed. and feel like I am functioning with half a brain, at best. I returned to work today and am having a hard time keeping my mind straight. Sorry, no advice on what you should or shouldn't do. It seems like there are lots of theories out there, but I agree that doing what your body feels is best and acting as if you are pg are the best. Hang in there and hopefully test day will creep up before we know it! Elena

Quasi:
I can honestly say the 2ww is the longest 2w I have ever had to endure.... Best of luck to you.

I read everything I could read about what to do and not to do after transfer. My doctor told me best rest the day of and then I could return to normal activities, except heavy lifting, exercise & sex. I talked to a few couples who had successful IVF transfers and found out what they did. After talking with them, we decided to do 2 FULL days of bed rest. I got home on Wed around 1pm and I didn't really move until Friday around 1pm. During the 2ww I did very little. I don't know if it helped at all, but I am now 6w pregnant. Good luck on your 2ww and I hope it works for you.

Hi Quasi .. Welcome !!

I'm not in tmt at the moment, but can surely relate to everything you're saying. As Lumi said, have a look at the Dos and Donts thread, which will shed some light on what some of us follow ..

Good luck with your cycle ..

Hi girls, thanks for your well wishes and helpful replies.
The days have been dragging on but i'm back to work on mon and i'm actually looking forward to that. Been playing lots of online scrabble to keep myself occupied and I swear that game is getting addictive. lol.. sad i know.. but hey, whatever it takes to pass the time yea? :)

Elena is right... Post transfer anxiesty shld be a legitimate mental condition. How slow are the days moving!!

My test date is next thurs (9th june) but my dh has gently suggested i wait till the following mon to test bcoz he is away to ireland on business. He wants to be here for moral support, in case it's a BFN (no.. he didn't say BFN). Sweet of him but to wait 4 more days... arrgh! Think i will prob test on thurs anyway... lol

I haven't told anyone about this treatment, not my parents, family or friends.... don't want to deal with all the questions. So only my dr, dh and YOU guys know. :)

Lumi, all the best for your ET. My prayers are with you. I've done just what you mentioned and am trying to condition my mind to expect a -ve. But I know i will still take it really hard if it really is tho.

BigJ, JENF and MIL.. i am sooo happy for you guys. congrats!! How does it feel to be preggers? :) Jenf.. you're an inspiration to us to keep trying and not give up hope. I am really happy for you and hope you all have a happy and healthy pregnancy.

Oh, and pls send some baby dust my way.. lol.
