Hello all I'm Mindy, I'm not even sure if I am in the right place.
I am 27yrs old and have a birth defect called Ectodermal Dysplacia. My husband and I would like to have a baby within the next year. My problem is there is a 99.9% chance that my child will have my birth defect and he or she will definitely pass it on to their children and their children’s children. I am not willing to do this. My child hood was hell to say the least, I was unable to open my eyes till I was about 2 and spent most of my youngest years in and out of hospitals. I do not have sweat glands or tears have very little hair and only 2 of my own teeth. These are all things I have been able to over come over the years but I would love to spare my child the troubles I have had.
I would like to use donor eggs. And it just so happens my husband is completely sterile. SO we'll have to use donor sperm also.
My questions are... Are there "egg banks" like sperm banks? Is this type of thing done often? Is a genetic disorder normally a "good" reason in the eyes of insurance companies for the use of donor eggs?
Ok that enough for now. I figured I'd start out getting as much info online as I can before I talk to my gyno. I'm really glad I found this place and look forward to any info ya'll can give me. ~mindy~
This isn't something I've got any direct experience of but it seems just from reading around, e.g. on these boards, that egg donation is getting more common. There is a forum on here to do with egg and embryo donation, so you may find people with more direct experience there. I also have the feeling that it is more common in the US than the UK (I think some people get paid to donate eggs, so there may be a greater supply). I'm not in the US so I have no idea what line insurance companies take on it.
I don't know anything about your specific condition, but it is something that might be picked up by genetic screening? That way you could use your own eggs but screen out any that carry the defective gene. I'm not sure what they can screen for these days and you'd need some really expert advice, but it might be worth investigating, assuming you haven't already
Good luck with picking your way through the maze of information and I hope you find what you're looking for. It may not seem like much of a consolation right now but at least you have age on your side (speaking as one who doesn't!) so you can take a bit of time to make sure you're getting the most appropriate treatment.

2004 1st IVF cancelled following brain seizure
2005 June/July 2nd IVF - negative
2005 Nov FET - postponed cos my Mum died
2006 - Feb FET planned, but neither frostie survived the thaw.
Unfortunatly there is no way of knowing before hand whether my child will have ED or not. They are currently working on developing a way to test for it but its probably 5 to 10 years away. So its a game of luck and chance if I use my own. ~mindy~
mindy,
I don't know about the Insurance part of it, however I have bipolar disorder and I didn't want to pass it on so I chose to use donated eggs and my husband is sterile also so we did donated sperm too.
You do have to be on the meds much longer when you ise donor eggs in order for your body to sustain the pregnancy. Other than that it is pretty common especially here in the US.
You definetly have to check with you insurance company because some don't pay anything for infertility, which ours did not so we had to foot the bill for all the treatment except meds.
Hope this helps some.
