who knows more?

Post by Alette »

I started IVF in March 2003, along with 2 other women from a board.

1 stopped the treatment, I got pregnant and the third woman got pregnant 3 weeks after me, with twins!!

this is what she wrote me today: (and I surely hope you girlz can help!)

today, 12 weeks and 4 days, we had the nuchal scan and from the nuchal scan it appeared that 1 of the babies has got a thicker neck, which could mean that the chance of having a child with different chromosomes/Down sydrom is higher.
We are very frightened and did not expect this at all.

The nasty thing about is that normaly they give you a ratio but they could not do this! Normally if you are pregnant from 1 child and you have a ratio like mine, you can consider an amnio. But with twins this is not a option. And having my blood checked will give a wrong impression too.
I do not like this at all and I am more worried now, specially because I will be feeling safe for the next 6 months. We will only be sure when both twins are born.

The docter says that the chance of getting a healthy child is bigger, yes maybe I am more alert now and better prepared.

They told me to go to the universityhospital because the docters can give me a better explanation and maybe give me a ratio, but the bottomline is that I have a bigger risk.
Most babies from risky Nuchals were healthy and also healthy looking (on NTscan) babies can be born with Downsyndrom.... this was the story from my docter, it is not really clear is it? Anyway, also a Down syndrom child is also welcome in our life and we shall see.

Further, the babies are okay and they have grown (6.2 cm from head to bottom) and the hearts were beating like a clock!

You can read I have mixed feelings. To reward myself and to get rid of this nasty feeling, I bought some babystuff....

This was her story, anybody any help, advise, websites for her???

Hi Alette

I can understand your friends concern but I was given ratios for each of my twins when I had my nuchal so I dont understand why they are telling her that they cant do this? I was told that the blood test was pointless however as they will get a higher reading as there are two and it cant be adjusted accurately.
I would encourage her to see if she can get a further scan as I also understand that CVS and amnio carries an even higher risk of miscarriage with multiples. I hope she gets some reassurance soon.

In the meantime, I hope you bought some nice baby clothes!, I have only bought one outfit so far, and that was only because Oshkosh was dirt cheap in Antigua! Still want to get the ok with my 20 week scan before I splurge! (when does the worry ever end?!)

Lots of love

Hi Allette,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Like Sue, I was also given ratios for my twins so I would suggest your friend goes back and asks for more information. It might also help her if she knows the size of the NT - they can give her this information too.

To be honest, if she would not consider a termination, there there is no point having further investigations like a CVS or amnio, it would just put her and the baby under additional stress.

Hopes she finds a way through.

Alette, your friend can be given ratios. I was even given them for my triplets. I went to the fetal medicine unit in Harley Street ( run by Prof Nicholaides who invented the Nuchal Test) but also had a nuchal scan with ratios at our NHS hospital. Ratios better at clinic as they are far more experienced.

I was told by the clinic blood tests are used & work to further clarify the ratios for twins but couldn't be done for triplets.
The clinic also explained that CVS & amnios can be done on twins & triplets but obviously higher risk of miscarriage. About 2-3 % for twins & 3-5% for triplets.

Hope that helps.

It is twins - amazing!!!! Due on my birthday- 28 October! No, unbelievably discovered at 12 weeks Nuchal Scan that it is actually Triplets!!

Hi Alette

again, i was given ratios for both my twins, although we did have to go private for our nuchal scan. Seems to be the consensus on this board that your friend has been misled about this.

has she considered having another test done privately?

hope to hear some news soon!

Caroline - just seen your post - I wsa told the blood tests could not be used for twins as one could mask the other?

Allette - any news on your friend?

thanx for your replies, I copied it and sent it to her.

My friend is going to another hospital this afternoon.

She is taking it very positively and she is prepared for a downchild now, although some investigation on the internet learned that there is a chance of 60/70% that the child will be okay.

The hospital told her that last year there was a woman with exactly the same thing and this lady gave birth to perfectly healthy twins.

My friend only wants scans but no amnio or other tests that can harm her babies. After 4 ivf's she is finally pregnant and she want to enjoy it. She says, it is not in my hands anymore, I am reasonable positive, all I can do is wait and accept.

I think she is so brave!!

good news for my friend.

but she lost trust in her hospital...

she went to the univercity hospital, they did the Nuchal Scan again and everything is okay! both babies had a rate of 1.8 mm instead of one baby mesuring 5 mm!

so her first hospital made a big HUGE mistake!!

(i would be ssssssssooooooooo MAD!)

but a big relief!!

(how can sonographists be sooo wrong on something so important?)
