Need more advice...

Hi Again I go for EC tomorrow and have the choice between local and general anasthetic, on one hand I'm a total chicken and hate pain - v low thresehold and on the other hand a general carries more risk and may make me feel ill. Have any of you had a local and did you feel much pain? Thanks again love Mands x

HI manda,i,ve only ever had local,they generally give you a mix of two drugs,pethedine for the pain and some kind of hypno drug(not sure of the exact name)you will feel and remember nothing(i promise)ive just had my 3rd e/c on local and even had the sedation reduced as i suffer bad with sickness after and i still felt nothing. Throwing up for the rest of the day though but thats me as an individual.Im sure local is better you can go home after 2hours. Dont worry see how you feel on the day,i promise you will be fine thinking of you lots of love sammyxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi there I'm afraid to say that when I had my egg collection , I had a local anaesthetic---NEVER AGAIN !! Don't know if it depends on how many eggs you have( i had 17) but the pain was awful !! I would defo have a general if I have another go ( hopefully not) sorry love woppa xxxxxxx

Hi Mands I have had a general two times now and would certainly recommend it. You obviously feel nothing at all and I was back in my room and having lunch 2 hours after collection and home within 3 hours. I was a little sleepy for the rest of the day - and obviously had some pain which will happen either way but certainly had not other side effects like sickness. Don't think I am brave enough to have a local. But, the choice is up to you - hope everything goes really well for you.

Mands I would definitely go for the general. They don't put you too deeply under and these days they have so many different types that won't make you sick. They should ask, but make sure you tell them if you've had any bad reactions in the past. I had a general and like Julia was having tea and toast in my room 2 hours later. Hello Mands I say general too - I've chatted with a couple of people on here that had local and none have said they felt or remember nothing! If you're pain threshold is low and you've got the choice, I would opt for general every time. Why put yourself through the stress of local if you don't need to. Sarah

Hi Mands, I've had 3 EC before and had local for all of them.......;They worked brilliantly for me each time. Had general before for the laparoscopy and was goggy and sick for the rest of the day. Also,for the first time after EC,I had to drive back home from hospital and it was roughly a drive of 20 miles.It isn't what I would recommend but it was like driving after having hayfever tablets. I think it works differently for each person. Best of luck for tomorrow.

Hi Mands, Please, please, please, opt for general anaesthetic. I did not have a choice and up till the point of EC , we were doing really well stress-wise. The Doc/Abottoir assistant that performed this ,was very reluctant to increase the amount of hypno drug, or pain relief, He gave me 1/2 the dose I'd had 2 weeks previously to get a molar removed by the Dentist!!!!! I have quite a high pain threshold, and you are supposed to remember very little about EC, unfortunately, I remember everything,cos I was very conscious during it. I had a lot of follicles, so even when what little of the drug he gave me wore off, he still refused to give me more, even when my husband asked, the nursing staff were also getting very anxious, and took gas+air in, laterly. But I will never go through that again, the pain was excruciating, I think I was just unlucky though, When I mentioned it to the Nursing Staff, they said all the womwn in that day had had a terrible time. Can't feel like I can complain though, as we are one of the lucky few couples that were funded. Sorry, if this sounds like a horror story, but I would'nt go through it again (on the bright side, We got 11 embryos to fertilise) I am on 2ww, fri 13th...'D' Day Scorry

Thanks for all your advice I opted for a general, and I was incredibly nervous, they said this was normal but by the time they got me down to theatre I was in a state they asked my dh to leave before I had my Gen and I felt completely terrified, the anethetist said that they should have kept him with me until I passed out but by that time it was too late. Everything ended up fine with 12 eggs, dh spermies have improved and are nearly normal now, so we're going 50:50 on ICSI and IVF. Belly is v sore and dh is feeling v guilty so I'm getting spoiled loads. Will no doubt feel better soon. Love Mands

Mands, Congrats on all those wonderful eggs! Let's see what sort of a party your dh's spermies have when they get to meet them!! I'm glad you went for general - I wasn't given a choice,and just had painkillers, with something else to stop me moving, and it was agony!! I'm gonna makae sure that they give me loads of drugs next time! Andrea <><

mands - its changing the subject a bit- but can I ask - you said your dh sperm had improved - any tips?! We have low sperm as main problem. Had varecole removed in Summer - but dh also had mumps - so think theres not much can do - but would love to know if you guys did anything clever to see an increase in count. Thanks! and GOOD LUCK!! Hope you tum gets a bit less sore (dont let on to dh if it does tho!)

Hi Caz My dh was with another women when he had the op done in '96 and when they tested him after the prescribed time his wee spermies weren't even moving. In fact when the consultant saw us last April she suggested that donor sperm may be needed but they'd retest just in case. They were so gobsmacked they phoned us immediately after they found out. We like to tell ourselves (especially me) that his wee spermies were brought back to life through us being happy together. It's our primary goal in life to put our happiness above all else. This also means that if IVF doesn't work for us, we'll just get on with loving each other. We are incredibly close, soul mates in fact. In April they suggested that our alcohol intake needed to be reduced to 10 units a week (which was horrible). We stuck quite rigidly to this and avoided using all our units in one night or saving them up. Also, for about 3 years dh has been drinking bottled water more by accident cause I hate tap water and as you may know London water is completely loaded with oestrogen. I know it's hard but reducing stress in your life is important, doing things to please other people makes no one happy. Relax, take it easy and remember that you two are the most important thing. One last thing, we stayed away from smokers, didn't go to bars often, dh stopped smoking the occasional one in fact we sounded nearly evangelical, friends and family were amazed. I test in two weeks and if it's negative we're going to enjoy some good old fashioned dirty living for a while! Yours in a very saintly manner Mandyxx

thanks Mands luckily we dont smoke - but we both LOVE wine and am SURE we drink more than 14 units a week. Got first consultation tomorrow and dreading that question! But what you say makes total sense. Dh has no sperm in normal test. But when they did the varcoele op they also did a biopsy and found a (very) few mature ones there. I dont really know waht this means for us - but the doc said that it WOULD be worth seeing someone about ICSI - so thats what we're doing tmrw. cant BELIEVE the ball starts rolling then! Quite scared!
