Silly Question

Post by LittleP »

Sorry about this, but as I have only just found out that I'm pregnant I'm in the very early stages of learning stuff.

DH and I are going out for a curry and I just wondered if anyone could tell me what is and isn't safe to eat. I have a list of things to avoid but just wondered if anyone of you had any experiences with Indian food.

Thanks for your help

LP,

Your body will not tolerate spicy food well. I read some books about protecting our pregnancy. I'm still learning myself.

Take care.

Hi Little P -

I just had a red Thai curry dish this past weekend. You can eat spicy foods and it will not hurt the growing fetus. My pregnancy book says, be willing to pay for it though. I, personally, have not had any negative digestive effects from spicy foods. Matter of fact, I have been quite regular. I guess it comes down to experimenting with what your system can handle, but it is not off limits. Beware of some seafoods and specific fish. And no sushi.

I'm a curry addict, but I never eat it in the 2ww (superstitious reasons, maybe it works! ) I havent stopped eating it since.
The only worry is that the meat you choose is properly cooked. If its a reliable indian that you have used many times then go for it.
In the 2nd/3rd trimester it causes real bad indigestion and heartburn, but no probs now.
Enjoy your curry and congrats on your pg.

Thanks girls

I guess those fears will never go away and each day will bring new ones.

I chose the mildest and hopefully safest option, and boy did I enjoy it. :D

Hope that you are all ok.

Love and hugs

I like Indian curry and Sichuang spicy dishes a lot, but I haven't eaten that kind food since the beginning of the cycle. From some readings, the 3rd to 8th week period is essential, major organs are forming, and the embryo is developing into a fetus. After 8 weeks, the sensitivity of fetus is reduced, so you can eat more you like. Eat what you desires, or ask your doctor if you are not sure. But don't eat raw fish or meat.

Remain causious for the first trimester though, and carry your baby safely.

hi Little P, i really am so excited for you!! re food, i have really followed my taste buds! i got some advice from a lovely yoga teacger who said if you fancy a curry or burger and chips, then go for that and not a lettuce leaf! i do think that apart from unpasteurised cheese, undercooked meat and raw fish, you really are safe. my dh is a doctor and he has encourage me to go with what i fancy. lots of women have cravings or are put off food, but that hasnt been the case with me. my problem has been excessive nausea and vomitting so to be honest whenever i've fancied something i've gone for it!! get lots of fruit and veg into your system but i've been advised not to have too many oranges later on as it can apparently make a baby hyper!!

good luck.

Thanks Minnow

It's so reassuring hearing that it won't hurt to have the odd thing we fancy :D

I hope that the nausea clears up soon. I have had nausea feelings, but when I eat so far that has put a stop to it.

As silly as this sounds I do feel quite reassured when I feel nauseous because it confirms that I'm pregnant

Hope you are ok

I have another one :(

This is driving me round the bend, I really do not know what we can and can't eat.

I have a lasagne at home and in the ingredients it says 2% mascapone cheese - does that mean I cannot eat it, because mascapone is a soft cheese?

All this is so confusing - I can't find anything I want anymore that I actually enjoy eating.

Anyones help with this is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi Little P

I know exactly what you mean. It is frustrating knowing what you can and cant eat. I was especially confused about cheese, until I found a website which gave me an exact list of what was safe and what wasnt. I would give you this website, but unfortunately I cannot access it any more! It was linked to Sheffield University.
Anyway, Mascarpone is listed as a safe cheese to eat, so you dont need to worry about that one!
If anyone else has a query which cheeses are safe or not, I do have this list to hand. However, its a long list, so im not going to type it all out!
Take care

Marscapone cheese is OK as K said, but you are not supposed to eat frozen ready meals. If you do make sure that they are really well cooked. Have you told your GP yet that your pg, coz as soon as I did she gave me a book called Emmas Diary which isnt great but gives you some really useful info. The midwife will also give you a great book but you are about 12 weeks when you see her, which I think is a bit late.
Have you tried looking at the website
www.bounty.co.uk
its really good and has many discussions that you just type a question in and in 2 minutes about 5 people have answered it

K and Susie

Thanks so much - this is such a new feeling having to watch everything. At least I'm learning day-by-day.

Hopefully seeing GP next week - we want to make sure that the 6 week scan goes well first and then we'll see him.

Got another blood test tomorrow to confirm levels are still doing what they should and then hopefully get the date for the scan.

Can't wait.

Hope you are both doing ok.

First off ... Congrats Little P and welcome to the board!

It's all pretty overwhelming at first, but it will get easier and easier. You're always going to worry about everything (just the nature of the beast), but you will relax a bit as well. First trimester is really tough. So many hurdles, and it's such an important time for both you and the baby.

As for what to eat and what not ... definitely pick up a book or two. You'll find that you start to collect pregnancy books along the way. Most of the good ones will give you a list of dos and don'ts regarding foods that are safe and foods to avoid. On top of that use common sense too. Some women suffer from morning sickness so spicy foods are typically not a good decision. I was fortunate since I didn't have any stomach issues during my pregnancy. I had spicey foods without incidence. But if something doesn't smell good to you, then don't eat it. I've read that many believe pregnant women have a gutt instinct about foods, so go with it.

Best of luck with your upcoming scan. The 6 weeker is a biggie! In the meantime relax and enjoy being pregnant. Read as much as you can about what to expect, and you'll do fine.

Hugs!
Kelly

Thanks Kelly

I think once I have the scan I will start to really believe this is happening - it is so nerve-wracking knowing that so much depends on that day. Keeping absolutely everything possible crossed that nothing changes and we have a good viewing :D

Hope you are feeling ok - not long to go now for you, you must be so excited :D

Big hugs
