when do you get ohss

Post by emmalouise »

Hiya, can anyone help me. I'll be having my 9th injection of menopur tonight and i'm getting really bloated and sore (which I presume is pretty normal) the thing is I don't know hardly anything about ohss and was wondering what the symptoms are and if you can get it before EC and Et.

Take care

Don't panic Emma. I was assured at my clinic that you only get OHSS after EC. It's caused by fluid filling up the follicles after they've been emptied of all those lovely eggs. You can't have it now.

If you're swollen now it's because you're ovaries are producing a nice healthy crop of follicles. Your clinic ought to give you info on the symptoms of OHSS - perhaps they'll do that after EC if they haven't already. Things to look out for are swelling that gradually gets worse rather than better (swelling itself is very normal), not peeing as much as you are drinking, nausea and vomiting and breathlessness.

It sounds like you're having very typical responses at the moment, but if you're worried about anything you should ask your clinic for reassurance. I convinced myself I had OHSS because I was sick after EC (it was just a reaction to the heavy sedation combined with a hot car journey home). I called the clinic 3 times in the same day, including once on the out of hours number, and started to worry that I was making a nuisance of myself. They were very understanding, though and in they end I thought, I'm paying them a lot of money, I'm entitled to a bit of reassurance!

Try and relax. Take good care of yourself

Hi Emma

The symptoms are servere pain and bloating, breathing difficulties, nausea and vomitting, faintness and reduced urination.

Don't worry about the bloating. I was truly bloated from day 5 or 6 of stims. Thought I was going to pop. EC/ET still went ahead (although pretty uncomfy !), but no OHSS.

Good luck !

Hiya Caroline

Thankyou so much for your reply. I feel so much better now. I haven't been told anything about ohss by my clinic but like you said they'll probs give me info when I have EC. At least I can relax now. I kinda thought it would be normal to be getting bloated etc but then I started to think omg what if it's not normal, what if i've got ohss. I've been a total panicker through this IVF. With it being my 1st time i've been worried about everything. Anyway thanks for the reassurance and for letting me know what symptoms to look out for.

Take care

Hi Emma

I dont think anyone really understands IVF until they go through it! Once you have, you will be a pro! I was also worried throughout my treatment, just because I didnt understand a lot of things. I certainly didnt know (and wasnt told) how uncomfortable and swollen your abdomen can be during stimming. I eventually got used to the ovary pains, but it was a little worrying at first. I certainly wish I had discovered this site earlier - its helped me so much.
I can recommend a good (UK) book on IVF which helped me. Its called 'In pursuit of parenthood' (Real life experiences of IVF) by Kate Brian. I was lucky to have this book before I found this website.
Good luck with your treatment
