HELP!!! - Egg Collection

Hi,

Hope everyone is fine out there. I am having e/c for the first time on Monday and I am very nervous, I would be very grateful if any of you's can talk me through it and tell me what to expect, if it hurts pls don't hide it from me.

Pat,

You won't feel a thing during the collection itself as they will sedate you. I remember being wheeled in then waking up in recovery with the whole process being over and nothing in between. As far as the level of pain you feel afterwards that can vary greatly from person to person and I guess it's probably somewhat dependent on how many eggs you have. In honesty, I was in pain afterwards and couldn't really stand up straight for a few days. This was partly due to my own stupidity of not taking the pain medications the nurse offered to me before I headed home. Once I got home, I took them and kept taking them and they really helped, along with a heating pad. I would plan on just taking it easy for a day or two afterwards if possible.

Meanwhile, there are probably some women who can tell you they didn't even need the pain meds! So, it's hard to say exactly what you will experience. You really don't need to be afraid of the procedure itself though. It will be over before you know it.

I agree with Staci - just try and relax, you won't remember much (I can remember the consultant counting as he collected the eggs but not alot else!) and when you get home just relax and take it easy till ET then you have to take it easy again!!!!!!!

Hello Pat,
Just relax - I've been sort of aware through both of my previous EC - although I sort of drifted in and out through the process. Afterwards I've never had any pain - never needed any pain killers - just went home and dozed for the rest of the day but nothing to worry about really.
Everyone is different though and given that different clinics do different things it's hard to say how you'll be. Just try to relax and plan to take it easy for a few days.

Hi Pat,

Please try not to worry, EC isn't that bad.
I had a general anaesthetic so I obviously felt nothing at all I was in and out before I knew it.
And people I've spoken to who've had EC under sedation have said they felt nothing either.
I was sore afterwards though but I'd had 36 eggs collected and was verging OHSS so it wasn't surprising really.
But a couple of days rest and was feeling much better.
I know it's easier said than done because no matter what anyone says you are always apprehensive but it really isn't worth worrying about.
Just try and relax and enjoy your weekend.

I had my EC 2 weeks ago on Monday and I was in such a state before it, I think we all have a fear of the unknown. I have a real fear of being put to sleep. It is nothing like a general aneasthetic, what they gave was intraveneous deep sedation. When the stuff goes in for a minute or two you feel totally relaxed and then the next thing I remember is them saying 'Wake up, it is all done' - they actually woke me in the Theatre. I was wheeled straight through to the recovery room where my husband was waiting and I was sat up in bed within minutes drinking a well deserved cup of tea. Honestly you really don't have anything to worry about. I felt a little tender down below but apart from that felt absolutely fine. I was allowed to leave the hospital 1 hour after my egg collection and I felt on top of the world.

I was sedated at 12:00 and was sat up in bed at 12:30 drinking a cup of tea.

Good luck for Monday and let us know how you get on - I bet you will be reasurring others on Tuesday that there is really nothing to worry about.

hiya pat
my e/c was last wed 6th july...had to be there for 7.45 with a hr and half travel to the clinic.i didnt sleep a wink the night before and was so tired and scared
was nothing to be scared of tho the worst thing about it was the embrologist and a few other ppl trying to get in a vein so i could be sedated,after 5 atempts and a feeling like they were going in my bones it finaly took a man embrologist to get in first time TYPICAL it was a funny expierance all i can say is i could feel everything they were doing like i was looking at it from outside almost like a outta body thingy,i wanted to tell them i could feel it all but couldnt
i have iv when i go to the dentist so iv had it before and that i dont remember a thing but this was diff
after they did the bizz i went back to my bed where my dh was waiting for me,after telling him in detail wot they did i drifted off to sleep while he sat reading his golf mag twice over
3 hrs later i was allowed to go home was in slight discomfort but nothing to complain about my hands and arms hurt the most where they had tried to get into the veins
got home i went to bed with a heat pad and my lavander teddy(big baby)
slept the rest of the day till bout 7
i felt very bloated and as if id been thumped as if id eaten a big meal,needed the loo and uncomfortable,this lasted till i went back on the fri for e/t
this was fine just again uncomfortable cos of having a full bladder and me having a tilted something!!!!!!(which i need to ask about)
at 1 point i was nearly hitting the ceiling the bed was pumped up that much ha ha
now im on the 2ww 1 week over...after going to the GP to check up on medication im on she put me off work so all im doing is resting and just taking things easy
going for a facial this afternoon to pass some time away and give myself some pamper time
so no need to worry pat but everyone is diff,u will be fine just keep thinking wot the end result will be and be positive it does help

Hi Pat

Egg collection was the main thing I worried about doing IVF. I was quite calm going to the hospital because my clinic had given me sleeping tablets to take the night before and 1\2 hour before.
My left ovary had done all the work and had 14 follicles.They got 12 eggs from this. I dont remember much, I did feel the needle a bit and it was maybe a bit uncomfortable but I was sedated. Unfortunately, it was more difficult with my right ovary, because there were only 3 follicles(Becuase of this they were more mobile) and by now I had started to wake up. This side was painful, but if I had still been as sedated as I was for the left side, Im sure it would have been fine. You learn from each cycle, so if I do another one I will ask about the possibility of sedation been topped up if this was to happen again. I was completely awake by the end.
I was uncomfortable afterwards, but it was bearable and just encouraged me to rest, which is what you should be doing anyway! Make sure you have paracetamol, as this is safe for you to take. I had the day off inbetween EC and ET (Which is a must. I certainly couldnt have worked).
I also had the whole day off for ET and the day after, but I think now I would also have more days off afterwards. I was exhausted by it all, emotionally as well as physically. Obviously each person is different and this is just my experience.
Anyway, its all been worth it! The whole IVF process wouldnt put me off doing it all again. Ive now got giving birth to look forward to!!

They probably mean you have a tilted or retroverted womb, which basically means your womb tilts backwards rather than forwards. Its nothing to worry about, I think about 20% of women have this, but it can make it a little bit more difficult to do ET. I was told by my doctor when I was 20 that I had a tilted womb. Funnily enough no one has mentioned it since, through all IVF treatment and there was no mention at my ET, so im now wondering if this is still the case! I think during pregnancy once you get to the 2nd trimester, it will start to tip forwards anyway.

how meny eggs did u have put back? r u expecting just the one?
i also wouldnt hesitate to go thru the treatment again if god forbid this doesnt work this time.......not sure my bank balance would agree with me tho id have to smile at the bank manager if we had to go thru it all again(NOT THAT WE R GOING TO ....*POSITIVE THINKING*
because we live on the border of wales and england if we lived 10 mins down the road in england we could of had it on the NHS .damn postcode thing again life doesnt seem fair sometimes,but if this works out it will be every penny well well well worth spent

I had 2 embryos put back. (Ended up with just 4 embryos from 12 eggs, so feel lucky!) I am just expecting one.
The NHS postcode thing does seem so unfair. We were allowed one NHS cycle, so very happy it worked first time.
Keeping my fingers crossed you are also lucky first time!

My EC was about as easy as it gets... and I had 25 eggs collected!
My doctor likes to have his patients stay as awake as possible, to be able to watch the procedure on the monitor he provides. I t all really depends on the womans threshhold, I guess.
When they began my prcedure, I was shocked because they do this thing where they wash out your vagina... it was the most unsettling part.
They had sedated me very lightly, and when they began, I yelped!
That was the last thing I remember!
I woke up fresh as a daisy, except for the feelings of OHSS.

As u can see I'm counting down the hours. Thanks for all your messgaes, still feeling a little nervous, but reading your messages made me feel a bit more relaxed than I was.
