Spent Monday to Thursday in Alder Hey hospital with Kirsty any one got any tips experience of it? Turns out cough which Jess had for weeks which I thought was her asthma and Gp sent me away with no medicine and said nothing on either of their chests was whooping cough. Jess got it then me mildy without whoop now Kirsten shes very poorly Cate

I'm so sorry. Your poor little girls, I didn't know whooping cough was a summer thing..I thought more of a winter epidemic. So what are you able to do for Kirsty? Did they give you a nebulizer and some Xopenex? Antibiotics?
Nothing worse than a tiny baby getting sick. When I was in the hospital with Amanda for her head injury, Jessica cought a cold, which brought on a double ear infection. She was miserable by the time we figured out what it was. That was at 3 weeks old. I felt so horrible.
I hope that Kirsty is feeling bettery soon. I love her name...it's so cute.

They are both slightly better the problem with Kirsty is she had only had her 8 weeks vacination and therefore has no immunity little soul. Shes getting better except for the nightimes when she has her bottle it's as if it catches and then she coughs and makes the whoop sound it's very distressing. She has antibiotics for ten days and I've read up that fresh air is also good. Be in touch Cate xx

Hope you don't mind me posting this. I only came across this site on searching for whooping cough.
I am from Liverpool and had to visit Alder Hey accident and emergency on Tuesday 19th July. My two sons aged 10 and 2 had been suffering from coughing and vomiting. The result of the swab taken were given today the youngest was positive for whooping cough. My eldest was negative but it was explained because he had it for a longer period of time that it was producing a negative result. They were both given zithromax antibiotics. Both my children were immunised.
I have been very frightened seeing my children so ill. I can't imagine how it must be for you with a baby so young. I hope your children recover soon.

Thank you for the good wishes yes it was very scary you suddenly think when doctors talk in low voices what might happen.
This week they both seem to be on the mend Kirsten has had her second jab?vacination, and because she got the antibiotics so much earlier her cough is more just like a cough. Jess aged 10 is still whooping from time to time which is distressing but I can at least comfort her and she does know it will clear up.
The doctor said it is known in other countries as the 100 day cough.
I just wish two weeks before Kirsten was admitted to hospital when I had them both to the GP she had recognised it and given antibiotics and it may not have got so bad.
So the moral is listen to your own gut feeling and also that all the mad diseases that I imagined went out with the arc are in fact still about.
This is due to the fact people are frightened to vacinate, whooping cough is rife in France (the doctor told me) also the vacination can be only 60% effective. hope your boys pick up soon Cate x

Thanks for the info, the Doctor did not go into so much detail with me, mind you the 2 year old was all over the place, as normal in between coughing. The problem was the boys would not cough when visiting the GP. I was determined for a Dr to hear them, that is why I took them to Alder Hey. Funny in the past when there has been any outbreak of anything such as mumps, I always believed the boys would be ok. Now I am not so sure.
