One embryo or two?????

Post by missmolly »

Hi,

DH and I are facing the dilemma of whether to have one or two embryos transferred next cycle. Our consultant has told us to have only one put back - to eliminate the risk of twins (complications associated with etc...). During our last cycle we lost most of our embryo's during the thawing, and feel it is a waste to freeze what could be used fresh. We are aware of the risks associated with twins, and are willing to take the risk.

What has everyone else been told by their clinics is regards to this? Have they told you that having two transferred increases the chances of a pregnancy??

Please help - it is difficult going against what the Dr has advised, so we want to be well informed.

Thanks
Missmolly

I know some of the ladies here have done three even, and I've heard of one doing four.

So, as long as you're prepared in case of twins, I'd say it gives you a better chance of at least one implanting.

I agree with Denise...definetly 2!!! It sounds like you are prepared for 2 and will be happy with twins...what a double blessing!!!

My doctor always implants 2 he told me...never just 1. Increases your chances one at least one implantation.

Good Luck and I hope they BOTH implant for you!!!

I wanted to only have one transferred in my first cycle (definitely did not want twins) but my Dr. recommended I transfer at least 2 based on the quality of my embryos.

If you didn't like the idea of twins, then I'd say just transfer one if they had a really good blastocyst to transfer but, if the quality wasn't great, then to transfer more. Since you actually wouldn't mind twins though, I have to agree with everyone else and say most definitely go with 2.

Good luck!

Miss Molly

My hospital obviously told us the same news about if you put two back then you increase your chances of multiples, but also on the other hand if one doesn't make it, then there's always a chance that the other one might.

We chose 2 embryos and I got a positive result - at my scan I found out it is twins. If you are prepared for this and happy for this outcome, then like me you will be filled with happiness.

I wish you every luck in the world.

Take care and loads of hugs

Hi missmolly,

We have always wanted to have two embryos put back - I personally can't think of anything nicer than twins if everything works out that way.
It increases the chances of at least one embryo taking and like everyone else said, if you wouldn't mind having twins then I'd say go for it!.
I'm hopefully having FET x 2 on Wednesday and I'm praying they'll survive the thaw.
If I could have three put back I would!

Good luck whatever you decide!

Hi

Just wanted to reply on the risks of twins.

I had ivf following 5 years unexplained infertility. 2 embyroys t/fd, one implanted and I had my baby girl in 2003.

I definitely didn't want twins so didn't go back for ivf. However, I fell pregnant naturally in 2004 when my girl was 8 months old. I was totally shocked to find out it was twins.

It was a difficult pregnancy and birth. They were born at 35 weeks and internal bleeding meant I had a hysterectomy at 34 years of age. I was told my body was overstretched with having 3 babies in 2 years and my womb just couldn't cope.

My boys appeared perfect but it now seems they may be partially sighted or even blind. I won't know for sure until they are 2 or 3 years of age.

I don't want to put you on a downer. The majority of people that have twins have healthy babies. However, things can go wrong. If I could turn the clock back, I would have used contraception after the birth of my first baby.

A terrible thing to say. I love my twin boys but if I'd have had to go for ivf to have another baby, I would definitely only had one embryo put back in.

Miss Molly:

I had three embryos of very good quality put back because I wasn't going to do IVF again, it was a one shot deal. I have a 3 month old beautiful baby girl. You just never know!

Hello Miss molly,
We've had 3 put back on each of our tries so far and if we get the chance on this cycle we'll have 3 put back too. Our consultant has said that it increases the chances of at least one of them implanting but of course they all might. This brings with it the normal complications of multiple pregnancy but for us it's worth the risk. You just need to work out what is most important for you.
Hope that whatever you decide you get the result you want.

Love
